Owning a lawn service has always been in the works for me. When I was younger I would help out neighbors, family and family friends with all of their lawn needs. Now that I am grown I have learned that having a good looking yard really makes the difference not only to the health of the yard but also the overall image of the property as one. I take great pride and honor in the ability to be able to offer mowing, edging, weeding, minor tree/bush trimming, and or just a yard clean up. Don’t worry, any yard can be helped! I am very open to hearing any and all of your yard needs!

Lawns questions, answered by experts

If you have a healthy lawn, it’s not necessary to aerate it. However, lawn aeration comes with many benefits that can improve lawn health and help you save money on lawn care

Aeration makes it easier for lawns to absorb water and key nutrients. It also encourages a strong root system and discourages weed growth. So do your lawn a favor: Make it as holey as Swiss cheese, and let it breathe. If you have more questions regarding aeration, you can contact a landscaping company near you.

One of the most effective ways to improve lawn absorption is to learn how to aerate your lawn. This is a process where you poke tiny holes all throughout it to break up tough soil and sediment, creating pathways for sunlight, water, air, and nutrients to seep into the plant’s roots. In turn, it promotes stronger root systems, making your lawn or plants less susceptible to pests and disease. Ideally, you’ll want to aerate your lawn at least once per year during the growing season—think late summer to early fall.

No. Both processes are important for a healthy yard and work toward a similar goal, although dethatching serves a slightly different purpose. Making sure the thatch doesn’t grow too thick prevents other lawn problems, such as attracting pests if the plant decay layer gets too big. Aeration puts less strain on your lawn than dethatching, but both are of equal importance.

The easiest way to rough up soil to accept grass seed and provide the best opportunity for its growth is to make several passes over the area with a garden tiller and rake away the loosened vegetation and debris. However, in some cases, very hard ground may require using a shovel or pick to break up pieces into smaller chunks that the tiller can handle more easily.

No, it's not a good idea to put grass seed directly on top of dead grass. For successful germination and growth, grass seed needs good soil contact. To prepare the area, start by removing the dead grass using a shovel or a sod cutter. Then, loosen the soil, add soil amendments if necessary, and spread the grass seed evenly. This allows the seed to come into direct contact with the soil, promoting better germination and establishing a healthier lawn.
