"We first heard of Solarshield after reading an article in the St. Pete Times about metal roofing. Our house was built in 1946, and the roof had some structural damage from termites and water leaks over the years. After speaking with Frank McKinney, the owner, we learned that he was not only a licensed roofing contractor, but a licensed general contractor as well. The last time we replaced the roof, they said they could not fix the "dips" and "humps" in the roof. Frank said he would fix it, and he did. The roof removal team arrived at my home by 7:00 am. Shortly thereafter Ron arrived to start repairing and replacing the damaged wood and roof trusses. At the end of the first day, they had removed the old roof, repaired the "dips" and "humps", replaced the damaged wood, and had "dried in" the roof. The next day the metal roof fabrication team showed up. It took them about three days to get the entire system installed and replace all of the flashing on our brick house. I paid very close attention to the manner in which they installed the roof due to the cost involved - and I was not disappointed. No one took any shortcuts, and they paid special attention to detail, almost as if they were working on their own homes. They cleaned up the area very well after they finished. The roof install went off without a hitch, and it really looks great. And best of all, the roof does not leak anymore. The installation of the siding has really made a difference in the appearance of the house. Frank has very experienced persons installing the siding and soffit and it looks perfect. Our goal was to reduce the necessity of painting every few years. Based upon that, Frank suggested vinyl siding and the aluminum "wrap" of the exterior windows. We are very happy that we followed his advice - we don't have to paint the trim anymore. We paid 16K for the roof and the siding. We recieved several bids for this job. This price was not the cheapest of the bids, but was the clear choice in terms of comfort level with the contractor, and level of service provided. Solarshield also replaced our old wood windows with new energy efficient vinyl double pane windows. Frank really took interest in the fact that we had an older home, and wanted to make sure that we maintained the style of the home when performing these renovations. All the framing around the windows was made of wood - which was a maintanence nightmare. Frank suggested that we wrap the exterior framing in white aluminum, which they fabricated on site. This eliminates having to paint the frame every few years. The windows were installed perfectly, and more importantly, they have improved the exterior aesthetics of our home. They also removed an old wooden leaky set of french doors upstairs with a new fiberglass double pane french door set. We paid approximately 10.5 K to remove the old windows, wrap the exterior in white aluminum, and install the 16 new windows in addition the the french doors upstairs. Giving a contractor a lot of money to make repairs around your home, your most valued asset, can be very scary thing. When so much is written about unscrupulous contractors performing substandard work, one can be very skeptical about trusting anyone to actually perform the work properly. Frank eased our concerns by providing expert craftsmanship and professional service in a timely manner at a reasonable price.
