"Sgt. Stripes Asphalt did a fantastic job. I am in Kentucky and the job was in Georgia. They were very efficient, communicated with me. They did the job on the weekend so there would not be any traffic in and out of Post-Office parking lot. Their customer service and work great. I would definitely recommend them."

"I hired Star Paving because I had been basically ripped off by a scam company before. Michael with Star Paving was understanding of my trepidations and was extremely professional. He arrived promptly and the work he did was phenomenal. This was an excellent purchase for the money and Star Paving has my full endorsement and brand loyalty."

"Wells Asphalt Paving did a great job! One day to tear out the old driveway and put in new gravel base, then a few days later laid the new asphalt. Efficient, explained things well and most important, did a great job at a reasonable cost. The neighbors are already commenting on day one!"

Small jobs welcome

"Matt installed our new driveway. I spoke with Matt about getting me a quote. He arrived at our home on time. Once we approved the quote that he sent us electronically, he got us on the schedule to get the job done. Our new gravel driveway looks amazing. I added a few things while the excavation was taking place (as working). He never complained and got right to it. I had a new quote every time I desired a change, so I could be continuously aware of pricing changes with no surprises. I am extremely happy with his services and would recommend him to anyone."

"I have feedback about Frank’s attention to detail, reliability & creativity (when he refurbished a pontoon boat for us…we couldn’t sell it until he completely overhauled it & we got an excellent price for it). I have seen his asphalt work & how important his customers are to him. He educates them on what to expect, provides details of each job…& delivers on his promises! He’s a man of integrity & sets the bar high for his finished product. On top of that he’s very personable & a good listener. He expects his workers to put the customer first & does not tolerate improper behaviors on the job. If you’re reading this, then you have found a pro in Top Hat Asphalt."

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. Some permeable paver designs include a water collection system set into the gravel layer to route runoff to a safe area for disposal.

Generally speaking, tiles are for indoor use, while pavers are for outdoor use. The main difference between travertine tiles and pavers is their thickness. Tiles are around 1/2 inch thick, and pavers are 1 1/4 inches to 2 inches thick.

Pavers are more rugged and can handle different weather. The extra thickness on pavers also makes them ideal for high-traffic areas.

The layer of polymeric sand under the pavers plus the polymeric sand that gets swept into the joints between your pavers holds them in place in a few ways. For one, the gritty texture of the sand helps lock the pavers together. Polymeric sand also contains bonding agents that get activated by water. Polymeric sand will take between 24 and 48 hours to fully cure, so do not walk on your paver walkway before this time.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.
