"One of a Kind Carpenter was terrific. All the work was completed- even though we ran into some challenges, which they quickly resolved. I have an older house, and these were not anticipated with the job. I also added on to the project a few times, which they managed to do in a timely fashion, and the quality of work was impeccable. I would highly recommend him, and I will not use anyone else for my work now."

"After searching many different companies, I was very please with the review that I read on Angie's list. June was always very responsive to my many questions, and explained the options of what we could do with the piece. We didn't want to hide the beautiful wood work by painting it, so we decided to have it stripped and stained. Victor and Jerry were so kind, professional and careful with the piece. They even took a leaf that we had wanted the China cabinet to match, and they did it flawlessly! I would highly recommend this company, and we will definitely be using them again very soon. Thank you!! :-)"

Customers say: Quality work

"I was so impressed by the quality of work done on my fence that before Chris left I gave him a list of about ten other projects I wanted done, including repair to worn wood siding, weather stripping, sagging screen door and other items. Again the work was extremely well done by professionals who obviously take pride in their work. Will definitely call Chris when I need anything else done around the house."

"Very well! This was a trial 2 hour job to see how AFE performs. I used an Angie's list coupon. Angel from AFE contacted me quickly. We met a few days later based on our schedules. He showed up exactly on time. I had him replace a kitchen faucet and then he helped me to remove an old window and fan assembly from the 2nd story of the house. I enjoyed working with him, and was impressed with his level of experience and ability to discuss/do everything from plumbing, to carpentry, to electrical work. I am planning to give him more jobs."

"I used Jeremey to level some uneven concrete prior to flooring installation. There were some small challenges to the project as well like raising a threshold. He did great work in the promised time frame. I highly recommend him."

"I can't say enough good things about these gentlemen. If quality and value are important, then these are the guys for the job. They quoted everything for me and even broke it down so I could pick and choose which projects i wanted to prioritize in my budget. Everything looks great, and they cleaned up absolutely everything. Awesome Job !"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.

For a professional carpenter, installing a window seat can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on some aspects of the project. Aside from building the seat itself, if they have to remove any cabinets, shelves, or baseboards, that will add time to the project.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

Framing most homes takes anywhere between five and eight weeks to complete. You’ll need to account for inclement weather conditions, material shipment times, the number of crew members, and the weight of your materials. If the weather is too hot, wet, or cold for the installation, this process could take closer to eight weeks.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.
