"Project was to replace decking, steps and railings on 12x20 deck and front porch. The crew was very careful during the removal and disposal of all of the old material and did an excellent job installing the new decking, steps and railings. Joe was very resourceful in resolving the only minor issue that arose during the project. We are very satisfied with the entire project."

"My husband and I hired James Forest Contracting to fix our roof after having storm damage. They were on average $300 cheaper than their competitors and also more personable than other companies we reached out to. They came to us to look at the damage and talk to us when others only wanted pictures of the damage. We hired them on a Monday and they were here by Friday (before more storms came) repairing the three areas of damage that we could see from the ground. I word it like that because when they got up there they noticed more shingles turned up, tree limbs that were on our roof that we couldnâ t necessarily see, and a clogged gutter. They fixed the damage that we hired them for but they also fixed all the turned up shingles, trimmed the tree limbs back away from the roof, and cleared a clogged gutter at no extra cost to us. We will definitely hire them again and recommend them to others."

"I was very pleased with the work Bill and his crew did. All were very pleasant and professional. They were able to do a final cleanup from over the winter, removing all sticks and leaves. Following that They weeded, raked, installed edging, applied and spread mulch. Did a final cleanup of the mulch, driveway and walk areas before leaving. Very happy with the job they did. I would recommend this company and I would hire them again."

"Joel and his crew did an excellent job installing a retaining wall structure to prevent erosion. That also laid sod and trim some trees. Very thorough job and left everything cleaned up when finished. We were very pleased."

"His work was outstanding in all respects. He was completely trustworthy.  His price was right in the middle of all the estimates I got. In my case he stuck to his estimate but he didn't find any unexpected damage while he was working either. He did the job in 4 hours less than quoted maximum time frame. I'd have no hesitation in recommending his services are using his services again.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

To prepare a deck for a hot tub, start by thinking about safe and easy access in and out of the tub. Homeowners should plan for steps or consider built-in seating, a level surface around the perimeter, and a clear, slip-resistant path from the house. A hot tub requires sufficient space around it for comfortable entry and exit, ensuring no awkward squeezing or stepping over high edges. Good lighting and handrails can also make a big difference, especially for nighttime use.

To maximize the utility of space under a deck, it’s important to keep this area dry and clean. One way to prevent the area from becoming too wet is to install an under-deck draining system. This affordable home upgrade channels water away from the deck and provides usable space for storage or a functional area below a second-story deck. Not only will this be a useful maintenance upgrade, it can boost your home’s property value.

Generally, a patio is more accessible than a standard deck because patios are constructed at ground level. However, decks can be made accessible by adding a wheelchair-accessible ramp, a vertical lift, or a stair lift along the entry. An ADA-compliant deck ramp costs about $3,000 on average. The additional investment will provide a much friendlier experience for your guests with movement impairments.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.
