"Modern did a thorough repair job including significant structural repairs on 2 levels of the home.   They documented their work extensively in photos (at my request) for any future  homeowner.  Modern was careful to tape off non-work areas of the home (for dust control) and they protected my newly redone hardwood floors with full tarp covers.   They cleaned up when job was complete and even repainted repaired areas.  They were proactive and treated for termites in one area, in case they returned!  I consider myself to be a discriminating consumer, Modern's work was superb.

"I've been working with Anthony (Tony) Merritt, Service Manager, since mid-July to rid my house of a family of groundhogs that dug a hole under my front walk and moved in!  Tony was immediately responsive to my late-night inquiry via e-mail and contacted me by phone the next morning to follow up. He was out the same day to set a trap and explain the process - which is still going on. These are humane traps that do not hurt the critter and once caught, they are removed to a distant area (so they can't find their way back to me) and set free.
Turns out the little guys had burrowed below ground and made a tunnel exiting at my next door neighbor's steps.  This meant an additional trap had to be set and both properties will require treatment to complete the job. So far we've captured 5 groundhogs and  2 baby opossums that were removed from the property  - and 1 unhappy squirrel that I set free!
Each time I find a "guest"  that has dined on the bait, I call the office and someone comes out within 24 hours to pick up the  trap and set a new one. Tony is very responsive, even on weekends or when he is in another area, to make sure the animal does not sit in the trap very long.  When we are certain that no other groundhogs are still living under the house, the remaining work will be completed.
The original quote was $295.00 less a $25.00 discount for being an Angie's list member. I paid 1/2 when the job started and will not be required to make additional payment until completed.  Understandably, the quote was for my house only and now that another property is involved, that may change.  I am very pleased with AAA's work, the friendly and professional manner in which calls are handled, and the years of experience Tony brings to the job.

Bird Control questions, answered by experts

You can take multiple approaches to keep animals out of your edible landscape. You can use natural repellents such as mint and cayenne pepper to deter them from your garden. You can also build a fence (or opt for a privet hedge) or keep the most enticing plants in a sectioned-off area. The most efficient method of keeping your four-legged guests at bay is to determine what animal it is and create a customized plan for them.

Yes, in some cases if your damper is left open, animals can come down your chimney. In these instances, it’s more likely that they have fallen in while looking for a safe spot rather than entered your house intentionally. Leaving your damper closed or installing a chimney cap can prevent animals from coming inside.

Hawk attacks on pets are rare, and they won’t target animals that outweigh them. Hawks typically weigh between one and three pounds. That means you don’t need to worry if you have a Labrador Retriever or French Bulldog. However, small cats and toy breed dogs, like Chihuahuas, are at risk. Pet attacks are more likely in winter when food is scarce or in the early summer when inexperienced young hawks are honing their hunting skills.

You can find a variety of humane bird repellent sprays online and at home improvement stores. However, if you want to try a DIY method that will keep birds away without harming them, mix some water, dish soap, and a few drops of peppermint oil and spray the area you want bird-free. Peppermint oil is a notoriously lovely smell for humans, but birds tend to avoid it.

It can be difficult to know what type of animal is in your attic until you see it. But several clues can help you narrow down the suspects:

  • Sounds: Smaller animals like rats and mice make scurrying and tapping/gnawing sounds. Larger animals like raccoons and opossums make louder clambering noises. Also, note when animals are noisy: Squirrels are active during the day, while rats are busiest at night.

  • Droppings: Rats and mice leave small, rice-shaped droppings (the rat’s version is significantly larger). Bigger droppings belong to larger critters like raccoons. As long as you’re not squeamish, an image search can help you identify what you’re seeing in your attic.

When in doubt, take photos of damage or other evidence and show them to an experienced pest control pro.
