"This is the second time I have used Tolbert & Sons and, once again, I was completely pleased with their work. Chris is honest, gives fair estimates, keeps his word, is patient, and his crew has the same values as Chris. Their work is first rate--absolutely beautiful! Their prep and paint quality are outstanding, as well. Chris and his team are pleasant, respectful, cause the absolute minimum of disruption, and they clean up at the end of each day. Their goal is to have a happy client--and they succeed!. When I was at work and when I was out of town, I had no worries at all about having Tolbert & Sons painters in my house. I will definitely use them again!"

"James responded quickly when I requested an estimate, and after I chose his team they started work immediately within a few days. I have a two story log cabin with two story garage that is similar that I needed stained. Additionally I had a few logs that needed some attention because of rot. While James and his team were cleaning and spraying other areas of the house I was able to make the repairs without slowing them down. Additionally James explained the potential cause for the rot may have been associated with the steep roof slope and type of leaf guard I was using withy gutter. James also took care of that while he was here with no delays."

"I contacted Jim because my door jam had cracked and broken away. He came out and took a look, and pointed out a few other things - some that I had previously noticed, and others that I hadn't, but had noticed the symptoms (improper weather stripping, for example). The price was extremely reasonable, and the quality of the work was top notch. He was also very clean, and left no mess behind."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

The best way to clean your decking is to clear debris from the gaps between the boards, sweep the surface, rinse it, apply cleaner, rinse again, and let it dry fully. A homemade deck cleaner made of two gallons of warm water and 1/2 cup vinegar is a simple cleaning solution for both wood and composite decking. You can sprinkle baking soda on any spots with mold or mildew, then scrub the area and rinse clean.

While you can use various materials like sand or even just soil, gravel is widely considered the best option to put under a deck. It provides excellent drainage and is resistant to water, fire, and pests. Gravel also helps anchor the soil to prevent erosion during heavy rain and acts as a built-in weed blocker, reducing regular upkeep. Furthermore, it is simple to spread, available in various textures and tones, and adds a polished look that complements any deck design.

You should refinish your deck to maintain its appearance, durability, and longevity. Refinishing your deck protects the wood from foot traffic and the elements. It also helps extend its life span by keeping rot, mildew, and termites at bay. By maintaining your deck, you can avoid the cost of replacing your deck sooner. A refinished deck also looks great and restores some of its original beauty.

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.
