"the insulation they recommended saved me about 5000kw a year. the amount of money i am saving is far more the insulation payment on my Eversource bill. No money cost to me out of pocket and my electric bill dropped quite a bit. best move i ever did."

"We had been living in our house for 5 years and although the kitchen was a new addition, every winter my wife & I had noticed how noticeably the temperature differentiated especially after the winter of 2014/15.  And because it was a dirt floor with some wood and old construction debris strewn about.  I was not so keen on staying down there.  In doing my own investigation there was some piping and insulation under floor.
So when investigating estimates we called a number of "green" companies.  Out of the three companies that came, only Frank Petrullo with Eco Green Solutions, noticed the mold and a water leak coming from fridge line.  He took the time to show me where the water was coming, how mold had proliferated on the wood floor joists and beams.  The dirt floor was somewhat moist and light was visible from outside along foundation rim contributing to the mold and moisture in crawl space.  He explained each of our options and detailed the steps in sections of each estimate.
We opted to have a plumber fix the water leak, then franks crew came in, cleaned up the mold, then layed down the crawl space membrane, finally insulating floor & rim joist.  All in under two days.  The crew showed up on time, left the open sections of the house clean, and we immediately noticed a difference in kitchen and rest of house.  Walking around bare foot in kitchen is more comfortable, the kitchen is less noisy, and house humidity is maintained.

"Joe did a great job on this, our dining room was a add on to connect the original home and the garage and had no insulation and boy in the winter it was unusable as well as the kitchen basically (the best part of the house). Joe came and drilled small holes in the attic floor that they sealed up later to allow for blowing in the insulation. And they cleaned up well. we have a 20 month old but there was nothing left over for the baby to put in her mouth. Joe is great! Our dining room is toasty and the kids can play in there year-round Plus they are were less than half of the expensive "efficiency" guys PSEG sent over. Those providers wanted to charge $10,000+ for basically the same job."

"They arrived on time. They offered assistance with moving the furniture out of their work area. The workers made sure to cover the floors and all the furniture before they began their work. The work was completed in two days as predicted. They forgot to include one of the entryways ceilings In the contract. I mentioned this to the worker and after a phone call to Ari they proceeded to do the work. Although I would have liked to see Ari at some point during the insulation process, I believe the work was done well. We will wait for this coming winter to give our final verdict.

"Max Construction came in to do a complete bathroom remodel to include installing a tub where there was none. Max was very accessible and responsive in getting a quote and answering any questions we had throughout the process. His crew showed up promptly 8 a.m. every morning and worked very diligently throughout the days. They were very conscientious in their end of day clean up. Even though we had difficulties with our order at Home Depot, they had no problem making numerous trips to pick up our orders as they came in. The tile work is beautiful and everything came out as we envisioned. Max's price was one of the higher quotes we received, but in the long run we were very pleased with outcome and the bathroom looks fantastic."

"We live in a single family home in Poughkeepsie, NY that received water damage to the family room, kitchen area, finished basement, crawl space, and sump pump room of our room. We were referred to First Call from our realtor who had very happy clients who had hired them in the past. Through our whole water damaged experience, the best call we ever made was to First Call Restoration. First Call is a family-owned company who knows how important it is to due right by their clients and do so with honesty, respect, and professionalism. They actually care about the welfare of their customers and are diligent in giving them peace of mind during a very traumatic situation. Their entire team from Janice and the answering service team to Mike and his field team are friendly, empathetic, and honest. First Call worked directly with our insurance company to get an agreed scope of work and always made us feel like a priority. Janice explained the entire process and Mike even educated us on how mold grows and how to understand the moisture readings during his assessment of our home. They took out only the wet and damaged parts of the home and worked around saving anything we can reuse or reinstall such as drop ceiling panels that were not damaged from water in our finished basement. They kept everything neat and organized and cleaned up very well during and after the demolition process. We are very satisfied with the mitigation services that they provided to our water damaged home. Even though we are still fighting to settle with our insurance company and are dealing with that stress, we feel completely at ease to know that the work that First Call did left the damaged areas of our home clean, dried of any moisture, and mold free. When the weather kept fluctuating between cold and warm temperatures (our home still doesn't have heat and water), we noticed condensation in our house like it was sweating. It was easy to pick up the phone and call Janice and the rest of the office team and heed their advice on how to relieve the moisture. Mike even came to the house to read the moisture and humidity levels and make sure everything was all right and put our minds at ease. With full confidence and no reservations, we can encourage and recommend anyone who received damage to their home to make their first call be to First Call Restoration."

"I hired Paragon a year and a half ago in 2016 to remodel a small galley kitchen and bathroom in a one bedroom in Manhattan. Overall, I thought they did a really nice job and would also have rated them a B+ (like one other rater had suggested) had this rating been available. I enjoyed working with Paul B, and Kyle, and the rest of the crew. They were professional, hard working, and a bunch of good guys. I think their labor pricing was reasonable based on my other comparisons. While I haven't done any remodeling before, I assume there is always some hiccups along the way. Process-wise, I believe there could have been slightly more communication/written organization rather than relying on verbal (e.g., the initial kitchen back splash was tiled staggered though I had asked for it to be stacked. This was easily corrected but it would have brought more comfort had everything been in writing). I also felt the plumber could have been a bit more professional. I had bought a shower system that didn't seem terribly complicated to me but he didn't seem to understand how the system worked, scaring me to thinking that I ordered the wrong parts. Eventually he got it but I was surprised that he wasn't familiar with it. The toilet also wasn't set properly initially on the wax ring so there was some leaking initially with the toilet. That said, they were great at coming back and resetting and fixing the issue per their guarantee. I tend to be a picky customer in all aspects of my life. My bar is pretty high so i did ask them to redo some of the tiling in the bathroom as it wasn't as smooth as I had expected. Again, they did reset it and generally had a good attitude about it. All in all, I liked the folks at Paragon, and appreciated Tom letting me pick the specific material I wanted for the project. I thought the pricing was reasonable, the crew worked hard, and they were fairly responsive to my high bar. And 1+ years out, the renovation is still good with no signs of any problems."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Closed-cell spray foam insulation itself serves as a vapor barrier (or vapor retarder). However, you may need to install a vapor barrier if you have open-cell spray foam insulation. When in doubt, work with a professional insulation contractor, as they can provide more detail about the specific needs of your home in your climate.

On average, insulating an attic costs about $2,500, with a typical range of $1,500 to $3,500. The final price often depends on the attic's size, with costs generally falling between $1 to $3 per square foot. For example, insulating a 1,800-square-foot attic would likely cost between $1,800 and $5,400.

If the project involves removing old insulation, this can add an average of $900 to the total cost, bringing a full removal and reinsulation project to around $3,000.

Several factors influence the overall cost:

  • Insulation Type: Prices per square foot vary significantly by material.

  • Reflective: $0.50–$1.50

  • Blown-in: $1–$4

  • Batt: $2–$4

  • Loose-fill: $2–$5

  • Spray foam: $2–$5

  • Structural insulated panels (SIPs): $4–$7

  • Project Complexity: Factors like sealing air leaks, poor attic accessibility, and required inspections can add to the cost.

  • Removal Issues: The discovery of mold, asbestos, or pests during the removal of old insulation can substantially increase the price.

Bathroom wall insulation not only keeps the area temperate, but it also reduces instances of mold, mildew, and rot. Bathrooms, after all, are havens for moisture. With this in mind, it’s absolutely worth it to insulate bathroom walls since it saves money in the long run. You won’t have to hire a pricey mold remediation service down the line. Also, insulation decreases outdoor noise and lowers energy costs.

Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but the actual temperature that can cause frozen pipes can vary. Generally, it takes 12 hours for pipes to freeze at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Uninsulated pipes can freeze if it’s 20 degrees Fahrenheit or colder for over three hours. If your pipes are insulated, it can take six hours or longer for pipes to freeze. Note that some pipe types freeze more often than PEX pipes. Copper pipes freeze more often because the copper conducts energy and loses heat quickly.

Although spray foam insulation typically has a higher price point than traditional insulation, the benefits often justify the investment. It offers superior sealing properties, which can lead to significant energy bill savings. Spray foam also provides excellent moisture resistance and soundproofing. Other advantages include improved indoor air quality by minimizing allergens, a long lifespan of 80 to 100 years, added structural strength to the home, and a straightforward installation process.
