"Workers showed up promptly and were very professional in establishing a clean work space by putting down plastic all throughout my upstairs. The workers were great in getting the job done correctly. I had removed all of my interior walls for them to spray into the walls and they made sure if i was placing new sheetrock to scrape the insulation down to the joists. However, I did not like that the owner did not show up as he was the one that gave me the estimate and then I had to relay everything we spoke about to the workers. Also, I placed a great deal of plastic on my floors in the basement and after the workers left I had to clean up areas where foam was sprayed onto my rug. Most of it would not come off. I would have hoped better cleanup would have been done. In the end, the two workers did work very efficiently together and completed the job to my utmost satisfaction.

"We live in a single family home in Poughkeepsie, NY that received water damage to the family room, kitchen area, finished basement, crawl space, and sump pump room of our room. We were referred to First Call from our realtor who had very happy clients who had hired them in the past. Through our whole water damaged experience, the best call we ever made was to First Call Restoration. First Call is a family-owned company who knows how important it is to due right by their clients and do so with honesty, respect, and professionalism. They actually care about the welfare of their customers and are diligent in giving them peace of mind during a very traumatic situation. Their entire team from Janice and the answering service team to Mike and his field team are friendly, empathetic, and honest. First Call worked directly with our insurance company to get an agreed scope of work and always made us feel like a priority. Janice explained the entire process and Mike even educated us on how mold grows and how to understand the moisture readings during his assessment of our home. They took out only the wet and damaged parts of the home and worked around saving anything we can reuse or reinstall such as drop ceiling panels that were not damaged from water in our finished basement. They kept everything neat and organized and cleaned up very well during and after the demolition process. We are very satisfied with the mitigation services that they provided to our water damaged home. Even though we are still fighting to settle with our insurance company and are dealing with that stress, we feel completely at ease to know that the work that First Call did left the damaged areas of our home clean, dried of any moisture, and mold free. When the weather kept fluctuating between cold and warm temperatures (our home still doesn't have heat and water), we noticed condensation in our house like it was sweating. It was easy to pick up the phone and call Janice and the rest of the office team and heed their advice on how to relieve the moisture. Mike even came to the house to read the moisture and humidity levels and make sure everything was all right and put our minds at ease. With full confidence and no reservations, we can encourage and recommend anyone who received damage to their home to make their first call be to First Call Restoration."
First Call Restoration has weekly training as well as daily meetings.

"We had some water and ice get into our new three-season room after the big 24" snowstorm.  After the insurance came through to pay for repairs, we contacted a few companies regarding having the solid soffits replaced with perforated ones that would help prevent future water backup and entrapment. A few responded, but when Alan from Westside came, he explained what the replace would and would not do.  We also asked if he could do the ceiling repair and he responded yes.  I had written on a Tuesday, got a call back on Wednesday, made arrangements for an review on Saturday afternoon (and he was able to come early).  We were promised an estimate by Monday and when it did not come through, I told Candi who determined they had the wrong email address.  By the time we were off the phone the estimate was to me.  My wife and I reviewed on on Tuesday, called on Wednesday to agree, Bucky the foreman was over on Thursday with the paperwork, they were there on Friday and did all the work and cleaned up thoroughly afterwards.  And we are very pleased with the job that was done- they painted the entire ceiling.  During the whole 12 day experience Candi was in constant contact to make sure things were going smoothly and without delay, and the fact that everything got done so rapidly and so well was incredibly impressive.  Not only did they accept a % off coupon from Angie's List, they added another discount on top of that to further reduce the cost.
Would we use them again- definitely!  Were we pleased with the work?  For sure!   Could the price be lower- don't know, as this was the only joint-estimate we had but the discounts definitely helped.  Were they professional?  Completely.  And was communication good- YES!
We have some additional projects that we are looking at through the year and will definitely have Westside come in and give us estimates.

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

"The provider came to our house to assess the problem.  They had installed the gutters a few years before, so we called them as we
liked their work.  The provider sent a worker out the next day.  He repaired the flashing and the siding, and found the ice dam problem.
He returned to install a heating cable for the gutters.  He worked in a diligent and professional manner.

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Yes, you should insulate behind shower walls. Insulating helps prevent heat loss, which keeps the shower or tub from getting too cold and helps maintain a comfortable temperature in your bathroom. Additionally, proper insulation and air sealing can help prevent wall rot and moisture buildup. It is recommended to use a high R-value rated foam insulation combined with a vapor barrier.

Radiant barriers and insulation serve different purposes, so one is not inherently better than the other. Radiant barriers reflect radiant heat, helping keep spaces cool, especially in hot climates, while insulation slows heat transfer through conduction. For optimal energy efficiency, it’s best to use both together.

Radiant barriers can enhance the performance of insulation by preventing heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter. The choice between them depends on specific climate conditions and the building’s design requirements.

On it own, aluminum siding has a relatively low insulation value (also called R-value); aluminum siding has an R-value of 0.61. However, you can purchase insulated aluminum siding to increase the R-value to between 2 and 5. You can also install additional insulation within your walls to help maintain temperatures within your home. On average, insulation costs $1,825 to install throughout the typical home.

Plaster itself has a higher R-value than drywall. However, there are other considerations surrounding plaster and insulation. As a general rule, it's easier to obtain consistency in insulating value and quality when working with drywall rather than plaster. Plaster walls often don't contain any insulation behind the wall covering by design, and careful evaluation is necessary when choosing to add it.

Whether you should remove old insulation before blowing in new insulation depends on your particular situation. Fiberglass insulation attracts insects and mold over time, so if it has been decades since your last insulation upgrade, consider removing the old materials before placing the new ones. However, most types resist mold, insects, and mildew, so once you get the go-ahead from your contractor that your space is free from all three, feel free to install the new insulation directly on top of the pre-existing materials.
