"Glen is friendly, knowledgeable, and conscientious. Definitely worth hiring and will do so again. If you can have a "family arborist," he just became ours managing a difficult tree removal without inflicting the damage others who gave estimates said was necessary! A+++ work quality, too."

"I contacted S.A.B. through ANGI and found out they were the ones cutting trees near my house already. I went up to talk with Steve who stopped at my house after that job and came the next day after a day it had rained. They completed the job of cutting overhanging branches and removing a group of six medium size trees all close together near the front of the house. They also cut a thick branch that was leaning toward my neighbor's house, although it was not dead, but just in case it fell in the future. Steve and worker Rodney did a great job and cleaned up when finished. I would hire them again."

"It has been a pleasure to work with OPS. The crew worked hard at clearing brush, mulching, seeding and removing poison ivy. They hardly stopped until the job was completed. Their project manager, Greg Dann, organized the schedule and made certain that everything was done to my satisfaction, even stopping by later to check on the crew's work."

"We highly recommend Henry and his team at Republic Masonry. Not only was the quality of their work excellent, the customer service was superior to that of many other companies. Henry let us know what work was done/was upcoming and was very professional in all dealings with us. The price for the job was fair as well."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Tree roots don’t necessarily break through concrete on their own, but they can certainly take advantage of existing cracks, even very small ones. As roots grow, they expand the cracks, making them larger and leading to serious and costly foundation damage. It’s a good idea to have repairs on any foundation cracks you’re concerned about.

Generally, you’ll want to prune back the trunk by 1 to 2 feet each year to promote bushy growth. Doing so concentrates vegetative buds closer to the bottom of the tree, where you can easily harvest fruit. For side shoots that are a year old, leave at least six leaves.

Never remove more than 30% of a tree’s foliage during pruning—even if your tree is really overgrown. Removing this much foliage at a time could kill your tree.

If you’re planning on keeping the tree, unless the roots are invasive, there’s no need to remove them, as doing so can cause damage to the tree. If the tree has been cut down and the stump and roots are left, grinding and removing the stump can cause root decay for some species. For other species, the stump and roots will need to be removed to prevent pests, disease, and possible tree regrowth.

The ideal time to prune a tree depends on the type of tree. Typically, late winter or early spring is a good time to prune but isn't always the case for "towering trees." It's best to trim when trees are dormant and before blooms appear but can vary depending on the tree type. It's always best to research the type of tree or ask a professional tree trimmer to determine when is the perfect time to prune your tree.

Transporting a fully-grown tree requires heavy equipment, typically specialized for the task. A tree spade is a truck-mounted tool that removes the tree from the ground in one location, transports it, and places it in a new hole in a new location. A combination of mechanized shovels and lifts is necessary to move very large trees, and the exact tools often depend on location and the surrounding area.
