"If you're looking to remodel, hire Bud at Above & Beyond Contracting! Him and his crew were reliable, trustworthy, friendly and easy to work with. His quote was by far the most detailed & fair I received. If there was an issue, he put your mind at ease and took care of it. He recommended details I didn't even think of and it elevated the remodel & I love it. I am so happy with my renovation and couldn't be happier that I went with Above & Beyond Contracting."

"I’m very pleased with the service and work I received from Timber Wolf contractors and his crew. He contacted me and arranged a time to look at the work I needed done. He promptly sent me a quote. He set up a time between our schedules to build my spiral staircase and replace a window with a vent. He arrived on time and completed the job beyond my satisfacon. I was so pleased with the results and communication I received, that I hired them to come to my other home to install "Flooring for my sunroom, pantry and hallway. They also painted trim and upgraded my hardware on my kitchen cabinets. I felt very comfortable with Timber and left him a key so I could go to work. I highly recommend Timber Wolf contractors for your home projects, they are professional, polite and hardworking. Respectfully, A. Saint"

"Joe and his team worked tirelessly to ensure that our project was completed timely and without interruption. He handled every aspect of the job, from the ordering of materials, organizing the sub contractors, applying for permits and completing punch list items. Couldn’t have asked for a better partner to work with on this project. Thank you so much Joe! You and your crew are the best."

Customers say: Quick response

"We bought a 1950s house that needed a lot of updating and Adam and his team were responsible for taking down a wall between the living room and kitchen as well as building custom built ins for the living room and around the fireplace. All of the work was beautifully and expertly done and we have received compliments from everyone who has seen it. Throughout the project, we were consistently impressed by his attention to detail and his knowledge of what would and would not work. He went above and beyond ensuring our project was his focus and even coming by on weekends as needed. Unprompted he even acted as general contractor to other work going on prior to our moving in. We hope to use him for additional projects and would highly recommend him for any project."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

A cross brace for a fence gate should stretch from the top corner of the gate’s hinge side to the bottom corner of its latch side at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of the gate. This positioning distributes the bulk of the gate’s weight to the base of the post, taking pressure off the top hinge.

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.
