"CT basement did a phenomenal job finishing our basement and we could not be happier with the results. They made every step of the process from design to the finished project simple and straightforward, everybody was easy to work with and made our opinions and needs the top priority and they were able to perfectly translate our vision into the final product. This was a fairly large project involving finishing 1200sq ft with an office, gym and full bathroom and their experience and expertise was obvious. They definitely understand the specific needs of a basement while making it look like any other room in the house. We would use them again in a second, we’ve even been joking about tearing down the rest of the house and just living in the basement!"

"My wife and I were experiencing water issues in December of 2019. We went through every company you can think of that works the State of Connecticut. We really had 2 companies that we were intrigued to hire. We decided to go with American Dry Basement Systems, because of their process/procedure in cutting the basement floor. As well as applying the super-slurry and super-crete. A crucial piece that was taken into consideration as our home was built in the early 1940's. Having the peace of mind the structural integrity wasn't disturbed, waterproofing concept, and not introducing cold joints. Dennis was amazing when he entered our home, he explained everything. Of course he knew it was a touchy subject since our basement was finished. To need demo and reconstruction was a big concern, however we knew to correct the issue was the most important aspect. Dennis received a lot of phone calls from me, he definitely was easy going on every question I had and help ease our minds. Within 3 weeks of signing everything the work started. The crew lead by Jamey were great!! They were able to get the concrete opened up and partially trenched within a day. We wanted the guys to work in an environment they enjoyed. We offered them soda and water. We even gave them a bluetooth speaker to use while they were working to enjoy music. They were very thankful for our hospitality we showed them. After all said in done, the work was completed to our satisfaction, they was a slight issue with the concrete level to the existing floor. I let the customer service reps know and have scheduled a foreman to come by the house on Wednesday. Overall I am giving American Dry Basement Systems a 5 Star rating it has been an absolute pleasure for the company to customer / customer to company relationship. The representatives, sales, and construction employee were all fantastic!! I can't wait to see this system work better to keep our basement dry!!! Thank you a bunch!!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Drilling into brick or mortar requires the use of a masonry drill bit. Masonry drill bits appear similar to standard drill bits except for the leading tip of the bit. The tip has a bulky carbide arrow-shaped end slightly larger than the rest of the bit shaft. Standard or high-speed drill bits designed for making holes in wood or metal don’t have the ruggedness or design shape you need to drill into brick. They may not go through the brick at all, and if they do, they’re more likely to overheat, crack, or dull before you finish drilling.

No, you shouldn’t lay bricks directly on dirt. While it might seem like a shortcut, it leads to a patio that shifts, sinks, and becomes a maintenance headache. Dirt expands, contracts, and erodes—none of which mix well with long-term stability. To build something that lasts, excavate the topsoil, compact a layer of crushed gravel, and add a coarse sand-setting bed. This layered base gives your bricks proper support, allows drainage, and helps block weeds from creeping through. Cutting corners here just means you’ll spend more time—and money—repairing your brick patio later.

Landscape boulders, especially porous stones like sandstone or granite, can crack or break over time. Cracks occur when water seeps into the surface of the stone and freezes. The risk is highest when it rains during the day and temperatures freeze overnight since the moisture has time to penetrate deeper into the rock before expanding.

Mortar, or masonry mortar, is mainly used in joints and as parging for stone, brick, or cement construction. Stucco is primarily a surface material used as wall coverings. For maintenance, masonry will need repointing or replacing as damage or land shifting occurs, whereas stucco will need patching or refinishing as it tends to crack over time along with other types of wear-and-tear.

Yes, staining a brick home can increase a home’s value, assuming your pro does a good job and you keep up with maintenance tasks. Staining brick is a much better way to increase a home’s value than painting brick, as the latter can cause chipping, warping, and bubbling. Brick stain, on the other hand, gets absorbed by the surface, so it can still breathe.
