If your dishwasher keeps filling with water at the bottom but doesn’t fill into the sink, the issue is likely due to a blockage within the dishwasher or drain. Regularly clean your dishwasher filter basket to ensure it’s not clogged with food, and run a vinegar rinse periodically if you have hard water to remove limescale buildup.

In most areas, drain cleaning professionals don’t technically need a license, as they aren’t altering your plumbing system in any way. However, we recommend hiring a drain cleaning professional with a plumbing license and certification. Certified plumbers are more likely to provide professional solutions to drain clogs without damaging your system. They’ll also have the diagnostic tools and experience necessary to remove the clog entirely rather than providing a temporary solution, as a handyperson might. Use Angi’s state licensing tool to check your plumber’s professional licenses before hiring.

A washing machine should drain the water used during its cycle through a drainpipe and out through the house’s plumbing. This is the same plumbing that sinks and shower drains run to, and if the U-bend is installed correctly, it shouldn’t smell. The total drainage from the house is then integrated into the city sewer system or, if you’re in the country, dispersed into a septic tank.

If you notice that the toilet is flushing and refilling slower than usual, you can use a plunger to clear clogs in the S-trap. If that doesn’t work, call a plumber to check your system and possibly clear the drain lines.
