"my wife Susan and I have used east coast pro painting on two houses now and have been very impressed with their work.our first house they painted the inside and also our aluminum siding and even our wood shed in the backyard, matching it with our house and dramatically increasing the desirability and profit when we sold it in 2019.we also had them come to our new house in east hartford for some interior work and staining our fence in the backyard.Sue and I cant say enough good things about Tom and Pantayas professionalism, excellent work ethic and just being easy to work with when it comes to taking care of our painting needs.thank you so much!"

"If you're looking for a company to do a quality professional paint job at an affordable rate I highly recommend Jonathan at Unique's Painting! I submitted a request for an interior paint project on the Angi app. Jonathan not only contacted me immediately, he also came to my house that same day to give me a quote. I hired him to paint 3 rooms in my new home. The existing paint job was horribly done and almost every wall was left with small holes and lumpy bumpy surfaces. Jonathan and his team did an amazing job at filling, sanding, & prepping the walls and trim prior to painting and as a result the final paint job in all 3 rooms turned out fantastic!! During the process Jonathan even repaired several damaged areas on the tin ceiling before painting it and sent me video updates since I wasn't there. I will definitely be calling Unique's Painting for all my future paint projects and you should too!!"

"Evan arrived on time and working alone power washed the entire house (1 story) in one morning. The north facing siding was was pretty heavily covered in mold as it had been 6-8 years since it had been cleaned previously. I am very happy with the level of work and highly recommend Donlon Painting for power washing vinyl siding. I am planning on hiring Evan for his painting skills in the near future."

Painting questions, answered by experts

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

Oxygen bleach uses hydrogen peroxide as a base and won’t harm wood when using it as a cleaner. On the other hand, chlorine bleach breaks down wood at the cellular level and causes irreversible harm. Although you may not see immediate damage to wood after exposing it to chlorine bleach, its strength and integrity are now compromised.

Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. With that in mind, you don’t want to add more stain than the wood can absorb, as you risk covering up its natural markings. Generally, two coats is the maximum you should do, although very dense hardwoods may only be able to take a single coat.

Typically, a fence requires one to two coats of stain. The exact number can vary depending on the porosity of the wood. For specific guidance, it's best to check the manufacturer's instructions. After applying the first coat and letting it dry completely, you can assess the finish. If it appears patchy, uneven, or you want a more saturated color, a second coat is recommended. An extra coat can also help cover lap marks.

Select based on wood type, climate tolerance, and personal preference for color and finish, with choices like oil-based stains for longevity.
