A deadbolt has a different design, construction, and security level than a regular lock. A deadbolt adds a layer of security and is most commonly used on exterior doors. The installation is typically more complicated, but they hold up to wear and tear.

Thieves can open almost anything with enough time and the right tools, but they also prefer easy targets that are unlikely to get them caught. Forcing open gates is loud and difficult, and to be able to open one electronically requires extensive knowledge of the system, which most thieves don't have. Electric and other security gates are great deterrents because the thief will move to an easier target. If the thief is determined to enter your property, they will most likely find a different entrance point.

Keyless locks are often considered safer since they’re protected by passcodes instead of a physical key, making it harder to be picked. However, they are not infallible. And like all electronic devices, outdated models are more prone to problems and safety concerns. If you’ve experienced multiple lockouts in the past year, or your lock is responding slower than usual after you key in the passcode, it might be time to upgrade to a newer one. Even if your lock is working fine, you should still change your access code at least twice a year.

Rekeying a lock is less expensive than replacing the whole unit. The cost to rekey is about $50 to $100 when you hire a pro or as little as $10 if you DIY. The cost to change a lock is $130 to $500, depending on the hardware you select.

Always consider security a top priority in your home. Perform a safety inspection of your home. Look for broken locks and rusty deadbolts, and take an inventory of who has access to your keys.
