"We needed the floorboard under our kitchen sink replaced as it had gotten so wet from a leak it was falling apart. I sent photos and Matt said the cost would be $85 per hour for labor plus materials. He estimated it could take up to 4 hours for the job, which we thought was excessive, but agreed to hire him due to the great reviews. He thought alltogether it could run from $350-$400. Being a business owner myself, I assumed he was quoting on the high end but would actually charge me for what he said - labor and materials. The job done by his one man crew was excellent. I must say the quality was great which is why I am giving three stars. However, the guy was at our house for just under three hours. I got a bill for $400. We priced the materials at less than $40. When I asked for a breakdown of the bill, he said it was three hours of time at the home, plus an additional hour to go pick up the materials, which comes to $340 and then exactly $60 for materials. I understand the upcharge on materials since they potentially did not have a 2 x 4 and some plywood on hand (though I find that hard to believe) and had to go get them. But then to upcharge and add an additional hour just so he could charge us on the high end of his quote is poor business practice. I verified this with other companies. When I disputed the charge, because of the additional hour of labor time charged, he simply argued that it was within the quote he gave me. When I told him I had seen something from Angi about 15% off for first time users, he said he had no agreement with Angi to discount his services. I would not use this company again simply because of their poor business practices."

I am an experienced professional with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Horticulture from CSU with an emphasis in Turfgrass Science. The emphasis of my business is to install new sprinkler systems or upgrade old controllers and systems. I also do sprinkler repairs, sprinkler startups and blowouts, fertilization and aeration. I can help repair dead zones in your lawn and re-seed them and I also can install sod to finish out your yard or plant seed. I have professional equipment and offer special promotions for fall blowouts and spring startups. Give me a call or email me for more information.

"I reached out to this company asking if they could inspect my sprinkler system and do a big yard clean up and removal of debris and such. I don't know much about my new house's gardens or how to maintain them, so I asked if they knew what to cut back, prune, etc.. They first asked me to email my info again, then after I did, they asked me to call and clarify AGAIN. This became tiresome; there was a lot to explain. Finally they came out and gave me an estimate. The man fixed my sprinklers but did not yet do the clean up--yet. He said it would have to wait. I was unsure what was ever included in the clean up after he sent an estimate. Then he missed the first appointment and then came back a few days later and did not do everything we had talked about. I realized they never sent me a clear list of what they were doing for their estimate. The biggest two problems were that the guy offered to mow my lawn for free to make up for being late, but then he included this in his labor (at 65 an hour!) even though I had explained I could do that myself and that I needed the heavier stuff done (the stuff I had asked for three times at this point). He did some, but not the tree, and not the backyard, just the side, and then the worst part was, he LEFT MY BACK GATE OPEN and I have a DOG! I didn't notice it until the next day; she was in and out all night and could have been run over!! Overall, they were very difficult to communicate with. I don't know, now, if they REALLY needed to fix my sprinklers for $300 and now simply cannot trust this b/c they were not clear, changed their story about a free mow (which I said, no, please put that time toward the stuff I cannot do myself!) and then the gate... my dog is my most precious thing. I would never again trust this company. Even though there is a lot more to do in my yard, I will hire someone else. I don't feel that what they charged was unreasonable... for the amount of work they did... it just was not what we agreed on for 65 an hour, I figured that was for like, the small tree removal!! And the guy and the woman communicating with me did not seem to be communicating well with each other. She even said, "he doesn't usually do blah blah blah, so I hope you appreciate that he had to make an extra trip to the dump and we expect payment at time of service..." If they didn't or couldn't perform what I was asking, why did they say they could? Isn't it his job to figure out how to manage his time? And how can I pay someone at the time of service if they change their service time? I'm supposed to take off work endlessly holding a check? I was very patient and accommodating about him putting me off for several weeks. They did not seem to understand how to run their business, but I wish them well. I just would never ever take the risk of my dog getting out again. Any lawn care business should know not to ever leave a gate open, and I even warned him to of course leave all gates closed! I paid immediately and just want to be done with them. I was disappointed with my experience, expecting better from people on Angie's."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Grass is the most popular and safest option for planting over a septic drain field, but you can also plant small flowering plants and other lightweight plants that don’t have woody or deep roots. Avoid trees and bushes within 10 feet of the field, as the woody roots can crack the perforated pipes. You should also avoid planting vegetable or fruit gardens over your drain field, as a leak from the pipes could contaminate the soil and put anyone who eats the produce at risk.

You should exercise care when deciding how to landscape over a leach field for your septic system. You typically want lightweight materials that won’t damage the drain field’s perforated pipes. When adding plants to the area, select plants with shallow roots, such as grass or flower gardens. Trees with deep roots could damage the pipes in the field.

A half inch above ground level is ideal for metal edging. This provides enough depth for the edging to hold in place and enough height to keep in most landscaping materials (like mulch or gravel). If you install edging too high off the ground, it will stand out from your landscaping and pose a tripping risk. If you install it too low, your ground cover won’t stay in place.

By definition, gardeners are experts at designing and maintaining outdoor gardens. Their job duties extend far beyond choosing the right plants for the area, which in itself is a job—they also help maintain the health and well-being of the plants. Gardeners work independently or for landscapers, nurseries, or horticulture design companies.

The best place to plant a rose bush is where it will be happiest. Growing roses is difficult if the location varies much from what the plants like. Choose a location that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight during the growing season but not much more than that in hot-climate locations. If such a spot doesn't exist in your yard, consider planting your rose in a movable container to take advantage of portability.
