"John gave us very fair quotes, able to fit in our timeline, on time, hard detail oriented craftsman. He completed first porch well within time promised, is coming back in two weeks to do two more porches."

"The contracted the work off to a third party. Jon took longer than expected. The windows was installed pretty good from the looks. Communication could have been better with knowing the job will take longer and what types of trims I wanted for the windows. As the contractor that was hired for this job by this company. Did a good job with putting up decent trim. As for the new windows they look great. I purchased the myself and hired sentri homes to install them. I will need to have a my siding on my house redone to be closer to the new windows so the gaps are not so obvious. That was not expected at first. But from old storm windows and not knowing how they were put in originally. There was some unknown things that was learned from the job being completed. I will have the siding of the house slightly done to match really good for what I wanted later on. My only concern is better communication with sentri homes. Overall they were great when I did talk to them."

"Bought an Angie's List deal online to install a ceiling fan or fixture and provided 3 potential dates in the coming week for the work. Received an email the next day from Ryan to accept the one afternoon date when I was available. When I confirmed, I received an email with a 2-hour window. A few days later on a Friday afternoon, Bob arrived  almost exactly in the middle of the time range. He took a look at the 1970's recessed light we wanted to replace with a combo ceiling fan/light we had bought several years ago. Bob explained that (1) the base of the fan would not cover the opening and (2) the coupon was for a "swap" and did not include the support bar needed to secure the new fan (I knew this as the coupon was clear about it). He quoted $15 for the part and an additional $45 for the time, which I thought was very reasonable and agreed to the extra $60.
We also knew that the fan base would not cover the opening and had bought a ceiling medallion we liked from the local home improvement store a while back. What we didn't know was that the opening in the center of the medallion was just a bit too small, but Bob offered some suggestions on how to make it secure. On top of that challenge, we were missing some screws and washers; the fan kit was more than a few years old so we couldn't return it -but Bob made it work.
While I'm sure it took much longer to put up our fixture than was planned, Bob did a great job retrofitting our fan kit into our old ceiling, and was polite and professional during the whole process. We would definitely recommend White Rhino for their promptness and quality.

"The technician did an excellent job. It did take a while to get the repair finished, but that was due to Bertazzoni delivering the parts. I have had multiple problems with this particular appliance. My range now works better than it did when new, but I have a feeling that even if I have continuing problems with it, American Home Shield will just repair rather than replace due to the cost of the range. By the way, I'm not exactly sure of the date of the repair."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

The average cost to renovate or remodel a home is $52,300, with most projects ranging from $19,500 to over $88,400. However, costs can vary significantly, from as low as $3,000 for a small project to $170,000 or more for a complete home remodel.

Several factors influence the total price, including:

  • Project Scope and Size: The extent of the renovations, whether it's a single room or the entire house.

  • Location: Geographic location affects labor and material costs.

  • Materials: The quality of materials chosen.

  • Room Type: Kitchen remodels ($14,500 - $70,000+) are generally more expensive than bedroom remodels ($1,500 - $5,500).

  • Other Factors: The time of year, complexity of the work, and any additions or expansions.

On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $15 and $60 for standard projects and up to $150 for luxury renovations.

Examples of specific project costs include:

  • Basement remodel: ~$20,200

  • Garage remodel: ~$27,900

  • Loft conversion: ~$20,200

  • Disability accommodation remodel: ~$4,300

  • Major home repairs: ~$11,700

If you are financing the project, note that some loan programs, like the FHA 203(k), may require a minimum project cost (e.g., $5,000) and will necessitate a home appraisal and professional cost estimates. Using a home renovation cost estimator can also help you budget for your project.

Modular homes are a type of prefab home. Specifically, manufacturers first build modular homes in sections and then deliver them to the job site. The modules, or sections, are usually at least 70% finished before they arrive on your property.

In comparison, prefab homes arrive in panels or segments, and workers assemble them on-site. Generally speaking, modular homes tend to be more durable, and their consistent construction standards may mean you’ll have an easier time getting conventional home loans.

Handypeople usually don’t hold trade licenses, so they typically aren’t qualified to tackle projects involving installing or making alterations to plumbing or electrical lines. Below are some jobs that a handyperson usually won’t be able to complete:

  • Installing plumbing for a new kitchen or bathroom

  • Replacing plumbing pipes

  • Installing or repairing septic systems

  • Running new electrical wiring

  • Installing a subpanel

Yes, modular homes offer a wide range of customization options for layout, finishes, and features.

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.
