"I was in a tough spot and Lenny really came through for me! He started and finished when he said and his work was excellent! They installed 6,000 square feet of carpet on 3 floors with 2 stair cases and not one flaw! I would not only use him again, but can't imagine calling anyone else!"

"If anyone is looking to get their hardwood floors refinished...do yourself a favor and call Warren and Alec...the father, son team with Clark Hardwood Flooring. They were absolutely fantastic to work with! They refinished my whole downstairs and also my stairs, in a timely and professional manner! I've been walking around for 2 days just in awe of the new life my floors received. We got 2 puppies in 2021...they were not kind to my pine hardwoods...as you can see if you zoom into the picture with them in it. Now...back to perfection! Hit them up, you won't regret it!"

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

The costs range from $3 to $10 per square foot, depending on the carpet type, labor, and subfloor preparation.

Not every type of flooring is well suited to a wood stove. However, ceramic or stone tiles are good choices since they are durable, heat-resistant, and easy to clean. Softer flooring options, like carpet, could be damaged by the heat produced by a wood stove—or even create a fire hazard.

Sheet vinyl is the cheapest DIY flooring, depending on the brand, style, and quality you choose. Not only is it one of the most affordable flooring products on the market, but it is also easy for most homeowners to install, as it only requires cutting, trimming, and gluing down to the existing floor surface. Some sheet vinyl manufacturers make a loose-lay sheet vinyl flooring that does not even need to be glued.

Carpet squares, tile stickers, painting or stenciling existing tile floors, and painting existing concrete flooring are also affordable options for DIY flooring.

While it's possible to cover asbestos tile with carpet, it's not recommended. Encapsulating tile beneath carpet doesn't eliminate the health risks. Over time, the asbestos tiles could degrade, releasing fibers into the air and potentially contaminating the carpet. Disturbance during carpet installation or removal might also release fibers.

There are a few different types of finishes to choose from for the final step of the project.

Water-based polyurethane sealants emit fewer odors and fumes but dry quickly, which can pose a challenge when trying to get a smooth coat. Oil-based polyurethane sealants let out more odors and fumes into the air (it’s especially important to wear a respirator if you choose this type), but they take longer to dry, which can be more forgiving during the finishing step.

Some may prefer wood oil to polyurethane because rather than creating a layer, it becomes part of the wood. Wood oil takes longer to dry, and is less resistant to wear and tear; however, it creates a natural-looking result by enhancing the grain of the wood.
