"I worked with Mark Hogan to address some minor roofing issues that could have become major issues. His crew did a good job repairing the primary issue, and also inspected the entire roof and replaced a couple of boots around exhaust pipes that were in bad shape. The four types of roof sheathing are plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), planks, and tone-and-groove boards. The overwhelming majority of homes use the first two (especially OSB) and the other two are not often seen outside of special use cases. Methods of sheathing include solid sheathing, open sheathing where there are gaps, and plank sheathing. Most roofs are solid sheathing.

Flat roofs are a solid option for people who want extra outdoor space. Flat roofs are very common in other parts of the world and only recently has the U.S. started to see the benefit in the increased space. Flat roofs are also easier to maintain and pose much less of a safety risk, which allows for more DIY work for handy homeowners. Some people also build green or living roofs that grow plant life. 

The best material to sheath a roof will depend on your budget and if you require the strength of more robust materials. For most homes, the added strength is unnecessary, and oriented strand board, or OSB, makes sense. It’s inexpensive and robust enough for most roof types. Another popular but slightly more expensive option is plywood.

You may become so frustrated with the look of moss on your roof that you contemplate whether to clean or replace your roof. Fortunately, you don’t have to go as far as replacing it. After cleaning the moss, you can use a chemical solution to keep it away. For further protection, trim branches that overhang the roof, as fallen seed pods and leaves on the roof allow moisture to collect, encouraging moss growth. Consider adding zinc-coated flashing to the roof, too. As rain washes across the zinc, it leaves zinc particles behind that inhibit moss growth.

While you technically can add a roof over shakes or shingles, it’s not a good idea. Roofing over existing roofing creates a moisture barrier underneath the new roof and since the trapped material is wood, you can expect a moisture problem. While you could get away with installing a new roof over asphalt or steel, wooden roofs should be removed, new underlayment installed, and the new roof installed over that. Also, the extra weight would add strain to your roof structure.
