"Juan and his team are amazing. Juan is very knowledgeable, and was always quick to respond to our questions. He and everyone that worked on our project was extremely kind and respectful of our home. They demoed our old deck and put in a new patio, we couldn’t be happier with the way the process has gone. Highly recommend Bernal Concrete!!"

"I would 100% recommend Higher Ground Irrigation & Lawn Care. I needed the post replaced on my gate and they did a quick and excellent job. Seriously, contacted them /(and bunch others) on Tuesday, they came out the next day to quote and did not pressure me. Then when I gave the green light, they told me they can begin work Friday and finish completely Saturday morning as the cement needs to set. Exactly what they said they did. Very nice people and very professional and affordable!"

"Christian, the owner, is honest, trustworthy, spent time exploring what was best solution for me instead of best solution for him. He stripped the deck and railings from a horrible textured coating that previous homeowner put on the deck. Other contractors didn't want to do the stripping. Christian is a perfectionist."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The proper height for a stair riser or deck step is between four and seven inches, with seven inches often considered the most comfortable. Building your stairs to this height ensures a strain-free step position and minimizes the risk of trip and fall injuries. For optimal safety and comfort, especially on deck stairs, a rise of around seven inches should be paired with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. While it is possible to design stairs with risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. Always check with your local building codes, as they may mandate specific dimensions that differ from these general recommendations.

Composite decking might cost more upfront, but it delivers value in terms of durability. Unlike wood, composite material resists common deck problems such as rotting, fading, warping, and all the other things you don’t want a deck to do. The extra processes lead to a higher price tag, but you’ll save big in maintenance costs down the road.

Yes, deck pier blocks can be used as an alternative to traditional deck footings, especially for smaller or low-to-the-ground decks. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks do not require digging or pouring. However, their use is dependent on local building codes. Some areas, particularly those prone to high winds, earthquakes, or hurricanes, may not permit the use of deck pier blocks. It is essential to consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck project.

There are more pros than cons when staining a deck. Deck stain is more affordable than paint, it protects the wood and allows the natural textures to shine through, and it can revive the appearance of your home. However, deck stain also requires prep work (sometimes days or more), carries more upkeep than a painted deck, and can fade over time if not cared for.

Both aluminum and composite decking materials are environmentally friendly, with aluminum decking coming in as the most eco-friendly option.

Though composite decking helps remove plastics from landfills, recycles wood, and lasts longer than traditional wood decks, it’s not recyclable and only lasts for 25 to 30 years on average. Aluminum can last well over 30 years and is almost always recyclable.
