"Eric supplied us with several options for tiling our backsplash. We went for the option that was a little more work and time but it was worth it. He was professional and timely and answered our questions along the way. Thanks Eric."

"Emilio and his subcontractors did a great job: A fair price, a short schedule, good attention to detail, and excellent communication through the project. I would definitely recommend hiring 614 for a drywall install and finish project."

"Professional - they delivered what they promised. Removed the old tile and tub, repaired a small crack in the drain line and installed the new walk in shower in one visit. The install crew was great."

"From start to finish our experience with Jesse was perfect. He came out with samples, and helped us pick the product that best fit our needs and budget. He didn't try to up sell us or con us into spending more. His price was far less than natural stone and the product is just as beautiful. The seams in the countertop are invisible and his measurements were perfect. The guy who quotes you is the guy who measures is the guy who fabricates is the guy who installs. You cannot go wrong with calling The Countertop Guy. We will absolutely be using him this summer when we do our bathroom."

"After the tile installer raised the height of the floor when leveling the floor, the front door did not operate correctly and hit on the tile floor in several places. Tiler shaved off the bottom of the door but it still didn't work properly. Gary knew immediately how to correct the door problem and ordered the parts. When the parts came in he was here on time and fixed the door in no time. Excellent work at a reasonable price. Will definitely use him again.

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Lack of durability is the most significant downside of painting tile. However, a painted tile backsplash doesn't see the same kind of action as, say, painted flooring tiles. For backsplashes, the durability of the finish is crucial because they often require cleaning. However, you can minimize the durability problem by using mild cleaners and water on the painted surfaces.

Whether you use a brush or roller depends on the size, shape, and amount of tiles. Rollers are easier to maneuver over large areas and can apply a more even coat of paint in a shorter time frame with no visible brushstrokes. Brushes are best for precision work, particularly in very small areas. If you don't want visible brushstrokes on your painted tiles, you can paint details with small foam brushes instead of bristled paint brushes.

The number of boxes of tile you need depends entirely on the amount of tile in each box or case. Different manufacturers package their tiles differently, and boxes contain different amounts of tile depending on the size, shape, and material. Often, the amount of area that a case will cover is listed in the product description. To calculate the number of boxes you need, take the total square feet of the space and divide it by the number of square feet the box will cover.

Terracotta tile is a broad term for clay tile that’s been fired in a kiln, and Saltillo tile is a specific type of terracotta tile produced in Saltillo, Mexico. In addition to Saltillo, terracotta tile comes in a range of other shades and styles. You’ll often find it used in buildings throughout Mexico, southern Europe, and the western United States.

To make a small bathroom look bigger, choose light-colored tiles in a medium- to large-format size. Lighter colors like white, cream, or light gray help open up a room, making it feel larger and more airy. While it may seem counterintuitive, small tiles can actually make a bathroom look smaller because the increased number of grout lines creates a busy pattern that visually shrinks the space. Instead, opt for medium- or large-format tiles for a more seamless, expansive appearance. For the best effect, pair your tiles with a matching or similarly colored grout to create a continuous surface that enhances the illusion of a larger area. Avoid dark colors, heavy patterns, and contrasting grout, as these can make the space feel more confined.
