"I hired The Critter Man to seal my house from mice (and any other critters). They responded promptly. Kris was amazing and made me feel at ease even though I had spent a few sleepless nights listening to mice scurrying around. He walked the inside and outside of my (very old) house and not only found spaces for mice to enter but found a hole in the door of my attic that could welcome raccoons, bats etc. Kris has a great personality and answered all of my questions. The job has been completed and there is no sign of mice. Value for the money? I have no idea what it would have cost to hire another company. I had someone else contact me but they only considered glue traps , but I not want to handle with dead or almost dead mice. I know I can sleep at night and my dog is safe and that is worth a lot. Hence the 5 stars in all categories."

"The service went smoothly and promptly with little time wasted. The only thing I would tell people is clean your floor around all walls as the chemicals will hold down the dirt until you mop it up (which defeats the purpose of pest control)"

"The first service went fine, so we signed up for additional work throughout the year. They let me know when they will come and they do what they said they will do. We called them in for the weeding and fertilization, and we were really concerned, because our lawn was in bad shape. They did some treatments and they have come back around 5 times since. They did weed control on our rock beds for a small extra fee.. It has helped tremendously. The lawn looks much better, and they are reliable. There was one time when the wind was blowing really hard and they told me to call them when the wind was not blowing, so the treatment would be effective. When I called, they came right away. They have been professional and easy to deal with. The grass is looking much better. I think their pricing is fair for what they provide. They call to follow up on things. I plan to continue using their services and would definitely recommend them."

Bird Control questions, answered by experts

There are DIY methods and store-bought pesticides available for the public to use. However, these pesticides also come with a risk, and you need to follow the directions correctly and take precautionary measures to prevent exposure to these chemicals. These methods may be an option for small pest problems, but you should call in a pest control specialist for persistent pests and infestations.

You can find a variety of humane bird repellent sprays online and at home improvement stores. However, if you want to try a DIY method that will keep birds away without harming them, mix some water, dish soap, and a few drops of peppermint oil and spray the area you want bird-free. Peppermint oil is a notoriously lovely smell for humans, but birds tend to avoid it.

Vinegar can keep some animals at bay, like deer, rabbits, foxes, and raccoons. Keep in mind that your household pets, like cats and dogs, also don’t like the smell of vinegar. You can soak rags in white vinegar and put them up around your garden beds to keep the pesky critters from eating your plants.

No, mothballs do not keep bats away. Not only are mothballs completely ineffective when repelling or removing bats, but using them could be illegal, depending on where you live. Remember, bats are federally protected, and it's illegal to use chemicals during the removal process, and mothballs tend to fall into this category.

It can be difficult to know what type of animal is in your attic until you see it. But several clues can help you narrow down the suspects:

  • Sounds: Smaller animals like rats and mice make scurrying and tapping/gnawing sounds. Larger animals like raccoons and opossums make louder clambering noises. Also, note when animals are noisy: Squirrels are active during the day, while rats are busiest at night.

  • Droppings: Rats and mice leave small, rice-shaped droppings (the rat’s version is significantly larger). Bigger droppings belong to larger critters like raccoons. As long as you’re not squeamish, an image search can help you identify what you’re seeing in your attic.

When in doubt, take photos of damage or other evidence and show them to an experienced pest control pro.
