"Ben and his crew were an answer to prayer. We were a little anxious about hiring a contractor since we were new to CO and didn't have any experience with contractors here. Our fears were calmed when Ben came out to give us an estimate. Most of the work was done in the Master Bath where he replaced carpet with tile, replaced the tile in the shower and around the tub and removed the tile on the vanities. He installed a frameless shower, a heated floor, heated towel rack and chandelier as well as all new fixtures. In the basement he built a wall with a closet and added a door to an area that we made into a bedroom. He is a very good communicator and makes sure we know what they will be doing each day. As well as doing excellent work, Ben is a man full of integrity and honesty, two things that are important in a contractor. His crew arrived promptly at 8 am and worked all day each day. They were very respectful of my home and cleaned up after themselves each day before they left. If I had a concern about anything, Ben was quick to make it right. He answered my calls and texts promptly. The whole remodel took about 6 weeks with time off during Christmas. We would definitely use AAA Construction again."

Solid Rock Construction is a small remodeling and handyman company based out of Longmont, Colorado, that was started in 2012 by Joseph Rice. In 2013 Alex Gerthe joined forces as a part time helper for a couple of months to try his hand at construction work. Both Joe and Alex benefited from the relationship and in January, 2014, they decided to transform Solid Rock Construction into a partnership.

If you want to use the space beneath your second-story deck, then yes, an under-deck drainage system is worth it. Having a drainage system in place lets you run power to the area, so you can install a ceiling fan, lighting, TV, or other appliances to create a comfortable outdoor living space.

Rotten deck boards can sometimes be repaired, but only if the damage is minor. Repairing small patches of rot involves strengthening the damaged area with wood hardener, filler, or epoxy. More substantial damage requires replacing the boards or rebuilding the entire structure in extreme cases. If the rot extends to the joists, posts, or beams, have a contractor evaluate the damage to ensure it is still structurally sound.

Deck pier blocks are one alternative to traditional deck footings. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks don’t require digging or pouring. They’re best for small or low-to-the-ground decks. Keep in mind, though, that not all areas allow the use of deck pier blocks, so consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck.

Even if your deck is properly constructed with a solid foundation, it doesn’t always mean it can handle the extra weight of a sunroom. Always call in a structural engineer to perform a deck inspection to evaluate the quality and structural integrity of the deck before building. You may need to reinforce the foundations and joists, and with decks in poor condition, it might be better to tear them down and start again. A pro can help you decide.

When it comes to rotten deck wood, there really is no fixing it in the traditional sense—it needs to be removed and replaced. While you can certainly do this yourself, we don’t recommend it as some of the issues causing wood to rot could have spread throughout your deck and an untrained eye may not be able to notice. The good news is that replacing deck wood isn’t the most expensive project, and can seriously increase the quality and aesthetics of your home.
