"We heard of all service moving from a family members’ recommendation. Move went very smoothly! Nathaniel, SeaBass and Dominic really took care of our furniture, everything was neatly wrapped up so nothing would get damaged. Would hire again!"

Small jobs welcome

"My wife and I hired United Prime Van Lines to move our 2 bedroom apartment. The movers worked exceptionally quick, and fast. They took care of all our belongings. Paul and Javier continued to stay in contact with us throughout the move with a 6 hour drive in between. This was important to us as, the distance isn't short and out belonging are expensive. The constant stories you hear in the news about movers didn't help us when picking a moving company, however, United Prime Van Lines took all of the stress out of the move for us."

"I used Fischer Van Lines for previous moves didn't hesitate to hire them again. Overall, my items were moved into my new home, so goal achieved. Getting to the goal was a long, drawn out, and overly expensive process. One mover kept taking breaks, including an extended bathroom break (I was charged for that time), and the other one (obviously frustrated) did the majority of the work moving the boxes. I have an injury, which is why I hired movers, and wound up having to take items to and from the truck to get the move going faster. I was quoted an estimated number of hours, which was the same as previous moves with the same amount of items, and was assured that they would do everything possible to stay in that time frame. I paid significantly more than I was originally quoted due to the longer move time and non-urgency of the movers. I called the company and expressed my dissatisfaction to a manager and was told I would receive a callback, which I have yet to receive."

Moving questions, answered by experts

It’s best to pack things that are in storage and non-essential items first. Start by packing up items you are taking from your storage unit, garage or shed, basement, and attic. You should wait to pack essential items such as toiletries and medications last.

You should transfer utilities at least two weeks before your final move-out date. It is best to schedule the turning off of all utilities 24 hours after your move. Doing so will ensure a smooth transition without any gaps in service while you are still living in the home.

There are generally three ways to ship furniture to another state: hiring professional movers, using consolidated freight, or through parcel shipping. Professional movers will generally pack your boxes in a truck and transport them to a storage facility or directly to your home.

A consolidated freight service will pack, load, and ship your items, but this is best to use for one or two pieces since your items will take longer to be delivered and will share truck space with other items. Parcel shipping such as UPS and FedEx is best for smaller items since there are size limits, and you’ll have to drop the boxes off at a local branch.

Tipping movers is not mandatory, and most professional companies do not expect it. However, it is a common way to show appreciation for their hard work and the care they take with your belongings and home. A standard tip is between 10% and 20% of your total bill, split among the crew, or about $10 per mover per hour, tipped individually. It's an especially good idea to tip if the movers work in difficult weather, handle specialty items like pianos or pool tables, provide extra packing services, or go above and beyond your expectations.

When moving yourself, you should consider the non-monetary costs, such as time spent and physical and mental stress. If you’re packing and moving every box on your own, or with the help of a few volunteers, you can expect the process to take several days or even weeks. While it’s a less expensive option than hiring full-service movers, keep in mind that the process will be much more difficult.
