"After a thorough telephone inquiry to explore possible causes for our home security system shutdown, Chad offered a house call the following day to confirm his suspicions and restore operation. He showed up when promised, identified equipment problems at two sites, replaced two system batteries -- one beyond restoring and one getting old -- and gave us very helpful information to relay to the next owner of our home, which will be on the market later this year. He clearly answered every question. His trip charge from south Metro Denver to our Broomfield location was quite reasonable, and the only other charge, for the batteries, was modest as well. We felt lucky to locate someone with Chad's expertise and prompt response, and would highly recommend him and his company, Custom Protection, to anyone with a home security system problem. Thanks, Chad!"

Customers say: Quick response

"I needed a tripod mast installed on my roof for a home weather station. Digital Concepts came out and did a professional installation. The next day, the anemometer measured 94 mph in a severe windstorm. Two weeks later, it measured 100 mph during the Marshall Fire windstorm. Unfortunately, my home was lost in the fire, but these measurements were invaluable in documenting the ferocity of these windstorms in the Sagamore neighborhood. The installation held up."

Home Security Systems questions, answered by experts

Leaving a light on at night probably does not deter burglars as much as we would like. While there isn’t much evidence supporting the theory that lights deter burglars, there’s not anything disproving it either. If you feel like it offers added security because a burglar thinks you’re at home, then you can set your lights to a timer so they go off and on at intervals, mimicking someone moving around inside the house at night. A better idea is to install motion sensor lights in your yard.

A deadbolt differs from a regular lock in its design, construction, and security level. Regular locks are typically used for interior doors, such as for bedrooms and bathrooms, and provide minimal security. They are easy to install and use, often featuring a simple locking mechanism on the inside. In contrast, a deadbolt is one of the most secure locks you can install on an exterior door. Its internal construction is designed to withstand significant force, adding a crucial layer of security that can deter intruders. While deadbolts may be more expensive and complicated to install, they are cost-effective for the security they provide and are built to hold up to wear and tear.

It depends on the type of sensor your home security system uses. If it’s a motion detector, any moving thing could set it off, from a roaming pet to a wind-blown curtain. Contact sensors would be triggered by the window being opened or moved. Also, be aware that any sensors placed too close to your vents could trigger false alarms whenever your heat or air conditioning is running.

A study from the University of North Carolina found that security system signs were one of the top ten deterrents for burglars when choosing a target, so they do have some effect. However, you can get into legal trouble for putting up fake signage, so it’s best only to put up signs when you have the alarms to back them up.

With the popularity of DIY security cameras and video surveillance systems, it’s important to understand the benefits and potential drawbacks to decide if it’s the right choice for you. Advantages and disadvantages include:

Pros

  • Video footage readily available

  • Reduced home insurance

  • Save on labor costs by installing security cameras yourself

  • Wireless systems are easy to move and set up

  • Monitor from your smartphone

  • Avoid false alarms

Cons

  • Features may be vulnerable to hackers

  • No direct link to authorities

  • Risk of installing the system improperly, reducing its effectiveness
