Age is certainly a factor in well pump failure. The older your pump, the more likely it is to fail. 

Beyond age, other factors can cause your well pump to fail, too. Things like poor water quality can cause sediment buildup in your pump. Without proper cleaning, your pump can seize up and fail. Having a dry well for too long can also cause your pump to fail, as it keeps working even though there's no water for it to pull. 

The efficacy of a drain field depends on a wide variety of factors, though a well-maintained one can last as long as 40 or 50 years. Of the different types of septic tanks on the market, concrete and plastic tanks tend to last the longest—upwards of 40 years if they’re pumped regularly—while steel tanks have a tendency to rust over time and may need to be replaced after 15 or 20 years.

There are three layers of wastewater in a septic tank: scum (solid waste that floats to the top of the wastewater), liquid (the relatively clean liquid wastewater in between the two other layers), and sludge (solid waste that falls to the bottom of the wastewater). The buildup of sludge is one of the main reasons septic tanks need to be pumped. If the tank is more than 1/3 of the way full with a combination of sludge and scum, it’s time to call a pro for pumping.

The lifespan of your well casing depends mainly on the material it’s made from. Stainless steel and galvanized steel casings are designed to withstand the pressures and environment of deep-water wells but are susceptible to corrosion. Most steel casings last from 20 to 35 years, on average. PVC casing is highly durable and, if used correctly, can last up to 50 years.

Conventional anaerobic septic systems are the most cost-effective and least expensive type, with installation costs typically ranging from $3,000 to $8,000. For comparison, sand filter systems cost between $7,000 and $18,000, while mound systems are the most expensive at $10,000 to $20,000. Several factors influence the final price. The tank material is a key consideration; plastic tanks are the most budget-friendly option, starting around $2,900, but concrete and fiberglass tanks offer greater durability and longer life spans at a higher cost. The size of the tank also affects the price. For example, a 1,000-gallon tank costs between $900 and $1,500, whereas a larger 1,500-gallon tank costs $1,500 to $2,500.
