"Good call on our part.  While the movers had really struggled to even get the piano into the living room with three guys, Fog City had two experts who moved and assembled the piano in about 30 minutes.  They arrived on the dot, were professional, helpful and highly qualified.  I was stunned, frankly, at how easy they made it all seem.  We are talking about a 7-foot baby grand weighing probably about 600 pounds.  Would use them every time.

"Shamrock is great. We were moving from two smaller homes in order to sell them and then buy a home together. So, we needed to store everything for an unknown period of time before moving it all into our new home. Shamrock came and gave excellent estimates for each home to move everything into storage and how much storage rates would be per month. The estimator was very experienced and was able to give an accurate estimate for the volume, number of movers, and overall cost based on all the factors of the homes (stairs, etc.). The movers came and attached scannable codes to every item and box and moved everything with care and precision. We found the whole company to be very professional, helpful, and nice. Our belongings arrived in the new home safe and in the same condition as when we had packed it. I would definitely hire Shamrock again."

"I've moved around the country a number of times, and I have to say, these were the best movers I've encountered! I didn't read Angieslist for those past moves, and that was clearly my mistake. These guys showed up on time and delivered on budget. And then they did more. I had already disassembled some items and packed them up before they arrived. Fast forward to hours later when they delivered the items, they actually assembled the items for me! (I also had a grand piano, and Precision brought in four movers to get the done job right and safely. Other movers said they could do it with three people.)"

"The White Glove Movers moved all the contents of my home to a new home 3 1/2 hours away. From the first moment I am at and receive my estimate from The White Glove Movers, I had immediate confidence in their ability to move me without a hitch. Their word is their bond. If they say they will call you back they call you back immediately I received my estimate within hours after meeting with The White Glove Movers. Follow up until moving day was great… I received email letting me know that they were ready to move me and that my moving date was a fast approaching, Always with the message to reach out if I had any questions. When I did reach out with questions prior to move date, they were quick to respond. Every step of the way I was being assured that all would go well. Moving day came and the two gentlemen and that came to move me, Erik and Ronnie, immediately instill confidence in me. They were ever so careful with my boxes… All my items. They were quick and efficient… But most of all, they were professional, courteous and kind. all of my items arrived in great condition. unpacking was quick! I was treated so well all the way around by The White Glove Movers that I would highly and enthusiastically recommend them to anyone moving. They made a very emotional and life-changing experience pleasant and stress free. Thank you The White Glove Movers...?? BRAVO BRAVO! ??"

"This team did an amazing job moving our large and heavy items from our 3rd floor walk up in SF, with care and efficiency! They were on time, work urgently, and were able to make everything fit in the truck we hired, even repacking to make it work. I highly recommend their services and would use them again."

Piano Moving questions, answered by experts

The average cost to hire professional movers is approximately $1,700, but the total price can range from as low as $920 to over $12,000 depending on the move's complexity. For local moves, typically under 100 miles, costs generally fall between $920 and $2,530. Long-distance moves are more expensive, with prices ranging from $2,700 to $10,000 or more.

Several key factors influence the final cost:

  • Distance and Home Size: The mileage of the move and the size of your home.

  • Number of Movers: Hourly rates can range from $25 to $50 for one or two movers, increasing to $100 to $200 for a team of four or more.

  • Services: Additional services like packing, unpacking, and storage will add to the cost.

  • Specialty Items: Moving large or delicate items such as pianos, vehicles, or large aquariums incurs extra charges.

  • Timing and Access: The time of year, your specific moving date, and the ease of access to your home can affect rates.

Don’t forget to account for other potential costs like moving supplies and tipping your movers.

Planning ahead is essential—this will give you the chance to coordinate your move during weekends or after business hours, and set up essential services in your new office before moving day to minimize downtime. Start by creating a detailed timeline and checklist for every phase of the move, from packing to unpacking. Inform your employees, clients, and vendors about the move well in advance, including any expected disruptions and how you plan to manage them. Delegate responsibilities to ensure all aspects of the move are covered. Lastly, set up the essentials at the new location first to resume operations quickly.

Moving straps like forearm or shoulder straps can usually support up to 800 pounds, sometimes more with specialized straps. However, that doesn’t mean that one person can always lift that much weight, just that the straps are rated for that amount. For example, some straps require two people working together to balance the weight of the heavy item.

When loading a moving truck, the general rule is to load the heaviest and largest items first to create a stable base at the front of the truck, which helps balance the weight. You can start with large furniture like sofas, beds, mattresses, and tables to form a solid foundation, or begin by placing your heaviest boxes against the truck's walls to create a base layer. After the base is set, continue loading other large items like appliances and square furniture. Lighter and smaller objects, including most of your boxes, should be loaded last. They can be packed into gaps, around, and on top of the heavier items to maximize space. Following this order makes unloading easier and helps prevent damage to your belongings.

Tipping movers is not mandatory, and most professional companies do not expect it. However, it is a common way to show appreciation for their hard work and the care they take with your belongings and home. A standard tip is between 10% and 20% of your total bill, split among the crew, or about $10 per mover per hour, tipped individually. It's an especially good idea to tip if the movers work in difficult weather, handle specialty items like pianos or pool tables, provide extra packing services, or go above and beyond your expectations.
