"I was skeptical at first of using HomeAdvisor to get more bids for work on our residential sewer lines but went ahead and accepted a connection with So-Cal Plumbing & Rooter. Jose called me immediately and his partner Alex and crew were here within half an hour. They did a thorough job diagnosing our issue and provided the most reasonable and fair bid we've seen. Once we accepted their offer, they began working straight away and returned in the morning to complete the job. We couldn't be happier with the experience and are grateful to Jose & Alex for their professionalism, honesty and thorough work. They will be our go-to plumbers from now on!"

"I do! This dynamic duo of father and son knew precisely what the problem(s) were and zeroâ d in on a cost effective, efficient solution. The drain pipes that were under my house, difficult to access and original from 1951, were rotted out and leaking noxious material onto the dirt. Also, I couldnâ t get hot water in my kitchen sink (the presenting problem) in spite of having a recirculating pump installed years ago. Don (father) apparently loves a puzzle, and he took it on as a challenge to figure out why it wasnâ t working. Bibbity Bobbiity Boo, the complexities were unraveled and now I have pippin hot water in my sink AND fresh new drain pipes. As a single, senior woman I am all to aware of how easily I can be ripped off by repairmen. Don is an old school professional. He explained everything, took pictures, made suggestions and gave me an EXCELLENT PRICE for work that was unexpected (the drains) but suddenly needed to be done. He not only took care of the job itself, but he knocked off a couple of minor repairs on my wish list. Generous, conscientious, knowledgeable, committed to providing excellent service. Finally, a plumber I can trust! Iâ m so relieved to have someone that I know will give me the straight scoop, back it up with pictures and evidence and then give me a great price. Straight A+ and 5 STARS"

"I contacted California Drains because my parent's home was completely backed up to the point where dirty water was coming out from the drains inside and outside their home. They promptly answered and booked me in the same day. They were able to contain the water from continuing to come out of the drains overnight and returned the next day first thing in the morning to get the problem fixed. Price was very reasonable, and the workers were very professional. Left everything clean and drains were completely cleared. It has been months since they came and there has not been an issue since. 10/10 will highly recommend to family and friends."

Sewer Cleaning questions, answered by experts

It is safe to flush small amounts of bleach down the toilet. Don’t flush more than ¼ cup of bleach. Instead, consider diluting it and pouring it down the sink drain.

A sewer cleanout typically looks like a white or gray PVC pipe with a removable cap. It's often located either in your yard or basement, depending on your home's plumbing configuration. The cleanout pipe is designed to provide easy access to your sewer system for maintenance and inspections. It may be flush with the ground or slightly elevated, making it distinguishable from other pipes. When you remove the cap, you can access the sewer line directly or determine its direction, which can be helpful when you need to locate your sewer line from your house to the street.

There are a few things that can happen to your sewer system if you don’t fix it. These include rainwater entering it and causing rust and corrosion, dirt and debris leading to blockages, small animals getting stuck inside and clogging your sewer line or entering your home, and shortening the sewer system’s life span.

Without a cap, nothing prevents toxic and non-toxic gasses like methane and hydrogen sulfide from slowly escaping your sewer system and entering your home and the surrounding atmosphere, resulting in a foul sewer odor throughout your house.

Ejector pumps can only push sewage 750 feet or less. That’s because their purpose is to move waste from your home to your sewer line—which is a relatively short distance. Grinder pumps can transport sewage further, but they manage lower volumes of waste than ejector pumps (and they don’t work with septic systems).

Snaking a drain can take as little as a few minutes for small, simple clogs, up to two hours or more for tough clogs located further down the drain line. For tougher clogs, a professional drain cleaner can likely get the job done much more quickly because they have the necessary tools and expertise. However, your drain cleaning pro might not be able to give you a firm time estimate until inspecting the clog and its surrounding plumbing.
