The lighting is absolutely gorgeous, and the smart features function perfectly, significantly enhancing the overall vibe of the space. From start to finish, the Amano Electric team was on time, professional, and highly informative, taking the time to explain every aspect of the installation. Their commitment to detail and ensuring my satisfaction was evident throughout the process. "The Huft technicians knew their stuff. They arrived promptly in the morning, removed the existing units, and installed the new units without a hitch. The systems were up and running by the afternoon, and have served me well over the last three years, working great in both summer and winter. Huft provided free semi-annual maintenance visits for two years. There was a minor problem with the rooftop unit recently, and they repaired it under warranty at no charge. The cost was not cheap, but for me it was worth it to go all-electric."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

The answer depends on your needs and the availability of your current electrical panel. If you’re hoping to seriously up the power in your detached living space, you may also need to consider increasing the power of the amp your home runs on (from 100-amps to 200-amps, for example).

While not always necessary, wiring your circuit breaker in a certain way can ease both the installation process and use afterward. For starters, you’ll need to install the electrical panel so that the main service knockout aligns with the cable conduit. If they aren’t aligned, you may not have sufficient working space to finish running the wires. Using cable trays, on the other hand, gives you a bit more freedom to and flexibility in where and which direction you install the wires. At the end of the day, the power flow will be the same whether the cords run up or down.

The NEC prohibits the installation of electrical panels within clothing closets. Closets are filled with flammable items like clothing, mothballs, shoe polish, plastic containers, and exposed light bulbs. If the panel develops a small electrical fire, it won’t take long to bloom into a real disaster. If you have an electrical panel in one of your home’s closets, move it as soon as possible with the help of a professional electrician.

Homeowners should avoid replacing a circuit breaker without turning it off. While you technically can replace a circuit breaker without turning off the main breaker—and professionals can and do—it’s only safe for electricians to use this process. Working with a live panel is extremely dangerous if you don’t have experience working with electricity. Always follow safety measures to avoid electrical shock.

Yes, the National Electric Code (NEC) requires at least one GFCI outlet in each sectioned-off portion of an unfinished basement, partly to ensure a power source is available for a sump pump in case of flooding. If you install multiple outlets in your unfinished basement, all of them must be GFCI-protected. For finished basements, standard outlets are generally permitted, but at least one GFCI outlet is still required per circuit. Keep in mind that local municipalities may have additional codes, so it's best to consult a licensed electrician to ensure your home is fully compliant.
