"Excavation work in this area is expensive. But with the right person - Austyn - you get what you pay for. He speeds through jobs efficiently and with attention to detail, offering updates & suggestions along the way. He knows his stuff and how to stick to the budget. "We bought a 'fixer-upper' and of all the contractors (and we have worked with A LOT on this house) he is the top. He is prompt, he always follows through, his team works hard and gets the job done fast and well. If there are any concerns he comes out personally and takes care of them immediately. He is flexible and thinks on his feet. His pricing is very reasonable. There wasn't a thing that we didn't like about working with Nato and team. He is our official go to guy for landscaping and other projects. We trust Nato, his work and recommendations to us We would definitely recommend him to our friends. My husband found him on Angie's list and it was one of the best finds we have had in the 3 years we owned the house."

"The work was done 5 yrs. ago and it was very good. It was done in a timely way. Over the past few odd weather years there has been some settling along one edge of the area. I called and although Labor Day got in the way I did get a response the following week. George came up and saw the situation. Yesterday, two hard workers came up and re-layed a significant strip of the pavers and it looks like new."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

Sewer lines can be buried anywhere from 18 inches to 8 feet deep, with a common average depth between 18 and 30 inches. The exact depth depends on local factors like climate and soil type. In colder regions, pipes must be buried deeper (below the frost line) to prevent freezing, sometimes as deep as 8 feet. The digging depth can also impact the cost of sewer line replacement. To find the specific depth for your property, you can check the building plans for your system, which should be on file with your city or local sanitation department since permits are required for installation.

The digging depth will depend on the size of the trencher you use. Even smaller units can dig up to 4 feet deep, which is plenty for a DIY job. However, much larger trenchers can reach a depth of 18 feet and are better used by a team of pro contractors, not a single DIYer. As with all home improvement projects, use the right tool for the job and proceed with caution.

Excavation is priced in cubic yards, so you’ll need to find the volume of the area in order to calculate costs. Multiply the length, width, and proposed depth of your excavation site, then convert it into yards to get the volume. Multiply this figure by the price per cubic yard.

Most homeowners can measure by hand to get a rough estimate, even if it’s tedious. You may want to pull out a tape measure or use a string to help mark the area.

Concrete blocks are the cheapest way to base a shed. However, the space in between allows critters to go under, burrow, and even damage your shed’s frame. For a more pest-proof option, consider building a shed base with gravel or paver stones. Both options are fairly affordable and easy enough for a DIY project. For gravel, you can build a wooden frame to contain the loose material.
