You may also notice foul odors, gurgling noises, water backing up in other appliances on the same line, or a poorly flushing toilet. After flushing the toilet, you should have about half a tank full of water. While the exact amount of water you’ll have will vary, you want to make sure you have enough to cover the bottom of the bowl and enough to sit above the P-trap drain. While low water in your toilet bowl can indicate a problem, too much water can also be cause for concern.

You can replace a spigot handle by unscrewing it from the outdoor faucet. Take the broken handle to a hardware or home improvement store. Ask for a new handle that matches the size of your existing one. Screw the new handle into the place and test the new handle to ensure it works and doesn’t cause any leaks.

It’s a good idea to drain your pipes to prevent them from freezing if you’re expecting extremely cold temperatures or planning to be away from your home for an extended period of time during the winter. You may be able to avoid draining your pipes if you insulate outdoor pipes and keep your home heated to a minimum temperature of 55 degrees.

A handyperson with basic plumbing experience can install a bathroom faucet, like the kind of skills you’d need to replace a P-trap or swap out a showerhead. They may not have deep knowledge of local plumbing code, though. If your faucet installation requires work on the pipes behind the wall or under the floor, hire a licensed plumber with the necessary training and licensing.
