"New Gen Exteriors removed the old vynl siding on my house and then installed new Hardie board siding with foam insulation underneath. Serg the owner was very polite, straight forward and easy to deal with, as were his men. They cleaned up each night and were also quiet when they worked, no loud radios etc. I plan on using Serg in the near future, because he does very professional work."

"Patrick was amazing to work with. Super responsive and diligent in the way he quoted the project, planned it out, and completed the job. He was great at handling discoveries that came up during the job and providing solutions to them. I'm very satisfied with the work and will be considering him for future projects. I recommend you that consider him for your projects."

"American Home Renewal did a fantastic job on our siding replacement and window addition project at a very reasonable price and were a conscientious, pleasant, straight-forward team to work with. Context: Our 3-story building has two condo units. We needed to replace an entire exterior wall's plywood siding that had significant dry rot and repair any rot that had reached the framing. While we were at it, we wanted to add four additional windows to that wall. Chris at AHR was very helpful and knowledgeable talking through recommendations with us, which included replacing our old plywood with lower-maintenance engineered HardieBoard siding. I am very detail oriented and ask many questions. He was never dismissive of our questions, and treated my co-owner and I (both women) with respect. His bid was both well-priced (comparable to bids for plywood siding not HardieBoard) and very comprehensive, including a detailed list of all material and services that were included in the project. He was always very responsive, replying to emails and calls within a day, both before and after we signed the contract. AHR has crews devoted to different work, e.g. siding, windows & doors. So our project was done in two parts: Team 1, headed by Andrew, first removed the old siding, did framing and structural work for the new windows, and installed the windows; Team 2 installed the new insulation, vapor barrier, plywood siding, and external siding (HardieBoard). Andrew, who headed Team 1, was exceedingly conscientious. He talked through choices as they came up, such as what parts of the framing had rot and needed to be replaced. In all cases, we talked through different options, and their cost differences. I felt we were able to make informed decisions about every aspect of the project without delaying progress. His team was also very respectful when they needed to do work from inside our home, covering everything with tarps, helping with furniture moving, and giving us advance notice of when they would need access. Team 2, who specializes in siding, worked like an amazing team of acrobats. I was amazed by how quickly they did their work, up and down the 3-story wall, and the very high quality of finish. This team's specializing on siding clearly pays off in its efficiency and quality. Both teams coordinated necessary inspections and left the work site tidy and well protected from the elements (this was in January) every day. My one negative of the experience is that our project start was delayed several months. This was primarily due to our building plans not being finalized by the initial start date AHR had assigned us due to open questions with the engineer (not AHR). After those were sorted out, we had to wait a few months for AHR to have another time slot for us. It was disappointing, but understandable given the high demand and low supply for construction services in the Bay Area right now. This was by far my best experience of several projects hiring contractors, tradesmen, or handypeople for home improvement work."

"Worked with Andrew - he was quick to communicate, included all necessary details, and kept in touch. He and his crew (Alex and Andre) showed up on time and had the whole deck demolished and cleaned up in only 2 hours. Would definitely work with him again."

Siding questions, answered by experts

Before starting a siding project in San Francisco, confirm if your property is in a historic or seismic zone, as this affects permit requirements and material choices. Schedule a detailed exterior inspection for hidden damage, lead paint, or asbestos. Mark all utility lines and clarify property boundaries. Order siding materials with salt-air resistance, and coordinate with neighbors if shared walls or tight access could impact the project timeline.

Helpful?

Siding projects in San Francisco typically take 6–7 weeks for smaller homes, 8–10 weeks for medium-sized properties, and up to 14 weeks for larger or historic residences. Timelines can extend due to required historic reviews, seismic retrofitting, or neighbor notifications. Coastal weather and limited street access may also cause delays, so plan for flexibility and communicate regularly with your contractor to keep your exterior renovation on track.

Helpful?

In San Francisco, combining siding projects with insulation upgrades, window replacements, or seismic retrofitting is highly efficient. Bundling these improvements streamlines exterior work, reduces labor disruptions, and can enhance your home’s energy efficiency and weatherproofing. Coordinating projects may also help you qualify for local energy rebates. However, keep roofing or major plumbing work separate, as these require different specialists and may complicate scheduling.

Helpful?

Siding in San Francisco requires regular cleaning to remove salt residue and prevent mold from persistent fog. Inspect caulking and weatherproof seals twice a year, especially after storms. Power wash annually and check for corrosion or loose panels, particularly on wind-exposed sides. For wood siding, repaint or reseal as recommended to combat moisture. Scheduling a yearly professional inspection helps catch early signs of weather-related wear unique to coastal CA.

Helpful?

In San Francisco, homeowners often underestimate the impact of coastal weather on exterior cladding, neglecting to use moisture-resistant and wind-rated materials. Failing to address seismic upgrades or overlooking neighborhood-specific design rules—especially in historic districts—can cause compliance issues. Skipping a thorough weatherproofing inspection or hiring contractors unfamiliar with local microclimates also leads to premature siding damage and project setbacks unique to the Bay Area.
