"Joel is very good at what he does. I explained to him what I had in my head, and he made it come to life. I have a beautiful covered porch with a staircase and landing that leads to an upper deck that looks out at the lake and Mt. Konocti. It is absolutely beautiful! From design to concrete, to frame and build and finish work to make it "pretty" for me, he did it all. I highly recommend Joel and JPS Carpentry!"

"They were on time and installed the handrails and shower grab bars. I should have gotten a written estimate as they charged $50.00 more than quoted."

Small jobs welcome

"Juan is the most experienced, honest and reliable carpenter we have employed for work on our house. He consulted with us about materials and design, then quickly tore out and replaced our backyard deck this year. It is beautiful and just what we wanted. Donâ  t hesitate to employ him on any carpentry projects !"

Customers say: Quick response

"It was not long before I recognized i hired an excellent craftsman. Spending 7 years in the trades after completing a carpenter apprenticeship my eyes were trained to assess attention to detail . Mauricio work is impeccable . From his prompt arrival in the morning to his end of day clean I found Mauricio friendly courteous and professional. His insight ideas and collaboration resulted in an excellent end product . My wife and I could not be happier . We were lucky to find him and so thrilled with his work instantly retained his services for 3 more projects. Mauricio has turned our home into a masterpiece- the only negative will be my disappointment when his work is complete, ill miss his welcoming smile ."

"Jim was extremely professional and his communication was excellent. He walked me through the process and gave me options. Jim amd his team gave me 5 star service on the 2,840 sq ft house they built for me. From the floors to the doors Jim helped me pick out everything came out great. I am so glad he was recommended to me by my neighbor Jared."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

There are a variety of second-story deck privacy ideas depending on your budget and aesthetic. For starters, you might consider fencing or tall privacy railing that masks a good portion of the open deck. A pergola or an awning can provide additional cover and shade. Outdoor curtains are an easy way to add or remove privacy at your convenience, plus they’re a wallet-friendly way to decorate your deck.
