Our driveway is about 100 feet long and a stretch about 50 feet long was erupting from roots underneath, causing major turbulence every time we drove over it. We got estimates from a few firms and decided on Elite because they seemed professional and experienced, and their estimate was reasonable (other estimates were up to three times higher). I’m glad we did. They did everything in a timely, responsive way, with no unforeseen add-ons, and our driveway is now in excellent shape. I really need to single out Brandon for praise. He was incredibly responsive and devoted. He explained everything in advance in an understandable way. He always responded quickly to my texts, even when I made clear no quick response was necessary. And he was clearly committed to doing a good job, even showing up on a weekend (with no extra charge) to manually speed up the drying process when some areas in the shade were taking longer than expected to dry. Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.

There are quite a few differences between concrete and asphalt. Concrete is more costly up front and more challenging to repair. Asphalt does better in cold climates and works well with radiant heat systems. Porous asphalt is also excellent for wet climates, as it allows the water to drain away. However, it does get unpleasantly hot in the summer and requires more maintenance than concrete.

Asphalt and concrete have their pros and cons, but it really depends on your priorities. If you’re looking for durability, concrete’s your best bet, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep. Asphalt, on the other hand, needs more TLC with regular resealing but is cheaper to install and easier to repair. Concrete also wins in curb appeal and resale value, offering homeowners more customization. But if you’re looking for quicker, more affordable installation, asphalt has the advantage. Ultimately, your decision should align with your budget, willingness for maintenance, and design preferences.

The life expectancy of your asphalt driveway depends on the climate, the amount of traffic, and how well you maintain it. While you can’t necessarily control some of these factors, you can control the amount of maintenance effort you put into your driveway. 

To prevent your asphalt from deteriorating prematurely, you should follow a good maintenance routine involving regular cleaning, reparation work, and resealing.
