"I found that after 25 years the grate had melted and the burner had become distorted. When I went to the shop I was shown a variety of options and made a decision to replace all the parts. The scheduler said he would call me back in the afternoon to schedule an appointment. He did. I received a 2 hour time frame. The technician was here at the beginning of the time frame. He wiped his feet thoroughly and covered my carpet with two large quilted matts to protect my carpet. He replaced all outdated parts and installed a new gas log system. It was finished within  a half hour. He took away all the old parts and carefully cleared away the matts with debris from the fireplace. I was thrilled when he turned it on because it had not looked this good for a few years.  The technician was friendly and considerate. Thanks, Custom Fireside for another great job.

"The man who cleaned our fireplace was personable, likeable and knew what he was doing. We thought the price for the service was a bit high ($99.00) but that does not reflect on the quality of the service or the person who performed it."

"Excellent! T.J. Bethlehem Is stellar! His work is impeccable. He is professional and personable. He is also extremely respectful of one’s home. I hope to use his services many more times. I can recommend him with good conscious to anyone who might need a handyman. It is rare to find someone so honest and with such incredibly reasonable pricing. You will never regret if you have the opportunity to have T.J. come into your home to do work. Respectfully submitted Andonia Cakouros"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Some types of electric fireplaces use more electricity than others. Models that produce 1,500 watts will have more of an effect on your heating bill than 750-watt models.

Electric fireplaces use an average of $1.85 of electricity every eight hours. These minimal operational costs aren’t likely to make a big difference in your electric bill—unless you’re using it as a primary heating source for your home and it’s running most of the time.

A chimney requires both a cover and a cap, but these parts often get confused with one another. A chimney cover seals the top of the chimney around the flue pipe to prevent water from entering the chimney. A chimney cap is a piece that sits above the flue to prevent animals, debris, and water from entering the flue.

Creosote logs can help to reduce new creosote build-up by about 60%, however they don’t replace regular cleaning. While creosote logs can help to prevent build-up of creosote in your chimney, they won’t remove build-up that’s already there. Creosote logs can be used as a preventative measure in conjunction with regular cleaning, but you will still need to clean your chimney about once per year.

If you would rather use vinegar to clean the stone fireplace instead of dish soap, this mixture should work fine. Vinegar is slightly acidic, however, so it may etch some kinds of stone without quite a bit of diluting. For a stone fireplace, dilute it to about one cup of vinegar for every gallon of hot water. It’s a smart idea to test the diluted mixture in an inconspicuous area of the fireplace and watch for etching. You can use vinegar to clean quite a few different items around your home, and it’s especially good at removing stains.

The cost to replace a chimney is about $10,000 on average and can cost up to $15,000, depending on the size, accessibility, materials, and extent of the replacement. Sometimes tearing the chimney down to the roof line and rebuilding it is an option. But if the chimney's internal structure deteriorates badly enough, a complete demolition down to the fireplace or the foundation may be necessary.
