"Started this project as a "reface" of my old cabinets. After meeting with Tom several times changed this job to completely new cabinets. So glad we did. My cabinets are beautiful, the process was seamless, and we couldn't be happier. Tom answered all my questions, made astute suggestions based on his cabinet experience, and kept his timeline as promised. Both "Tom's" owner, and associate were professional, left my house clean each day, and did excellent work. I would highly recommend this company for new cabinets."

"CertaPro has painted the exterior and one interior room of my house a couple of weeks ago. These folks did a fantastic job, restored the beauty of my house, rendering an appealing result. Vicky and Ricky, the contact people were very professional and polite. The painters, Luis and Albert worked extremely hard and demonstrated high level skills especially when working on the tough parts. The price was more competitive than other quotes I received. Overall, I am extremely happy and would strongly recommend CertoPro to others whose house needs repainted."

"Best painter ever hired. Very professional, worked with my schedule at a very reasonable price. I was impressed with Rudy who even painted the interior of a closet that sorely needed it as he knew I was going to sell my home next month not to mention the light bulb he replaced both at no charge. This is definitely personalized service. Thank you for a fantastic job!"

Closets questions, answered by experts

Yes, adding a built-in or custom closet generally increases your home's value and makes it more attractive to potential buyers. A well-designed closet adds utility, organization, and a touch of luxury, which are appealing selling points. Most homeowners see a return on investment (ROI) of 50% to 60%; for example, a custom closet can add about $1,000 to your home's value on average. The specific ROI depends on the type, with custom walk-in closets typically providing more value than reach-in closets. However, to maximize value, ensure the closet doesn't significantly detract from the room's usable square footage. Converting an entire room into a closet can actually lower your home's value. Similarly, using overly lavish materials may not recoup their cost. A good strategy is to add a closet that takes square footage from a non-living area, such as a garage, to create a mudroom closet.

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

Yes, 12-inch shelves are often considered the standard closet shelf depth for storing folded clothing, shoes, and small containers. However, if you plan to store bulky items such as blankets, baskets, or cleaning supplies, you may want to go deeper. For specialized layouts, an adjustable system can give you more flexibility.

There are a few reasons custom closets are expensive: materials used, the luxury factor, and time to build. The people who can afford custom closets are those who can afford increased rates, and construction workers and contractors know this and charge accordingly. The time to build custom closets is substantial, especially if expensive material is being used or intricate details (like carved wood) are added to the project.
