"We think Secor Painting did a fabulous job. Our house was in very poor condition. Lots of scraping and sanding. Days and days. Jason Secor owner is a really nice guy. He gave us a thorough bid and stuck to it. No add ons. True to his word. His crew worked really hard & were quiet (sanders, scrapers aside) courteous . They knew what to do and they were very good & clean! I think that Jason told them what the plan was and they set out to do it perfectly. He stopped by went to get everything at hardware store but did not hang around because they had everything under control. That and he was busy giving bids... This was such a positive experience we would be delighted to recommend Secor Painting they took an eyesore and created a jewel."

"Was Referred to Color Craft by a friend.  Brett came out and looked at my home.  He looked at my home and gave me a very fair estimate.  His workers were very good about prepping the surfaces before painting.  The finished product looks great, we are very pleased.  Brett was very good about answering question throughout the entire project.  We would refer Color Craft to all our friends."

Interior Painting questions, answered by experts

Professional lead-paint abatement companies use a variety of methods to remove lead-based paint, depending on each particular situation. Some of the most common methods include:

  • Total removal: $8–$17 per square foot

  • Demolition and replacement: $1,000–$15,000 per project

  • Encapsulation: $4 per square foot

  • Enclosure: $10 per square foot

  • Chemical stripping: $10–$17 per square foot

If the lead paint is in a place that is not easily disturbed and is not flaking or deteriorating, you do not necessarily need to remove it. Lead is toxic when dust particles or flakes from peeling lead paint are ingested. If people are not in the area with the lead paint, it may be safe to leave it in place. You still may want to consider encapsulation with a paint formulated for covering lead-based paint, just for an added layer of protection.

DIY is possible with strippers or sanding, but professional services ensure efficiency and prevent surface damage.

Yes, you can paint over old exterior paint, but success depends on the condition of the existing paint and proper surface preparation. If the previous coating is in good shape (not cracked, peeling, or flaky), you can paint over it with less prep work. However, for the most durable and professional-looking results, follow these key preparation steps:

  • Clean the Surface: Thoroughly clean the exterior to remove all dirt, grime, and mildew. A pressure washer can be very effective for this.

  • Scrape and Sand: If the old paint is peeling, cracked, or flaky, you must scrape off all loose paint. After scraping, sand the surface to create a smooth, even base for the new paint. Sanding is especially important for wood siding.

  • Apply Primer: Using a quality exterior primer is highly recommended. It ensures the new paint adheres properly, improves durability, and provides a uniform finish. If you are painting a lighter color over a dark one, a tinted primer will help cover the old color more effectively.

Some brands offer paint-and-primer-in-one products for convenience. Taking the time to prepare the surface properly will not only increase your home's curb appeal but also help protect your siding and extend its life.

Sanding paint that contains lead is never safe, and sanding modern paints can still be hazardous. However, you can protect yourself by wearing a high-quality respirator during the process or by using a wet-sanding technique. You can wet the wall and then sand or use a wet sanding tool to achieve this.
