"Went well - company was very responsive. We had a power outage the morning of the appointment, and I called and was able to reschedule the appointment to later in the day (they called another customer to swap appointment times). The technician was able to tune up the garage door and fix the issue with the garage door not closing with the remote and explained to me the issue of why the garage door was not closing (due to excessive resistive force, which was fixed after the garage door was lubed)."

"I looked at three companies and felt the most comfortable with Eric and found his price to be fair. I wanted an opener that was quiet. Eric researched the maglock and quiet operation gate opener. This means that for the gate to open, the control has to sequence release of the gate lock first and then signal the gate opener. Eric completed the task on time and on budget. We had to have him back about 18 months later to adjust the gate. The gate's weight had caused a drop that left no adjustment possible. The closing plate had to be cut off and rewelded. Eric responded and made the necessary adjustment for the cost of a maintenance call. Eric made very good recommendations as to placement and design of gate. We checked three references and they were all excellent."

Gate Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, professionals can install gates with locking mechanisms and access control systems for added security.

Yes, most electric and automatic gates can be opened manually. They are equipped with a manual override or release mechanism that detaches the motor from the gate, allowing it to be moved by hand. This feature is essential during power outages or other emergencies.

To activate the manual override, you will typically need a specific key or tool. In some cases, you may also need a screwdriver to remove a cover to access the release mechanism. The use of a key is a common security measure to prevent unauthorized individuals from manually opening the gate.

Because every model is different, it is highly recommended to consult your gate's user manual to familiarize yourself with the specific procedure before you need to use it. Keep any necessary keys or tools in an accessible location. Be aware that automatic gates can be very heavy, so opening and closing them manually may be difficult.

In North America, electric gates are also subject to the UL 325 Standard for Safety, which includes provisions to allow emergency responders to access the property.

You don’t need a permit for an automatic gate in most cities because it isn’t a structural change to your home, but you need to check. A pro can help you with this and since we don’t recommend installing an automatic gate yourself, you should already be in contact with one, making this a frictionless question. Outside of permit requirements, you need to consider your homeowners association (HOA), as some are against gated homes.

For homeowners concerned about security, an electric gate may offer peace of mind. Electric gates will require a code or remote to open, so you don’t have to worry about young children getting out of the yard or someone breaking onto your property by simply swinging open the gate. But because it needs power to operate, installing an electric gate will be more complex and expensive.

The obvious disadvantage of an automatic gate is that it runs on electricity. If the power goes out, it won’t open or close unless there’s a manual override. Many homeowners will need a backup generator so they don’t get stuck on either side of the gate, particularly when looking to park a vehicle. Automatic gates are also much more complicated than manual gates, with tech-heavy components that make them more expensive to repair.
