"I have been in the business for 40 years and he is the only person that I would hire for doing that particular kind of work. If there is a scale of 1 to 5, he is beyond that scale because he is that good."

Small jobs welcome

"Very professional start to finish. Received a quick detailed estimate, and scheduling and service were also very promptà ¢à  à ¦speedy in fact. Our countertops look fabulous, exceeding expectations. Ità ¢à  à  s difficult to find someone to do this work, and I had my doubts about using a company I found on the internet. But we are so glad we took the chance on Surface Link because they did a perfect job. It is Hard to find a contractor we can say that about todayà ¢à  à ¦. We are often disappointed. Not with this company. Or this technician (Steve ) who is a pro at this. Time will tell, but as of today, we are thrilled."

"Found John through his web site and asked him to provide me a quote. Though he lives/works 4 hrs away, works frequently in the Marin area and stopped by to take a look and provide a quote. I was a bit leery because his quote was much lower than others I had received locally. After looking at samples of his work and speaking with his references we decided to work with John. We couldn't have asked for a much more pleasant experience. John was very accommodating during the whole process. Prior to ever signing a contract, he probably put in 3-4 hours of his time between meeting with us, changing design/drawings, etc; not once pressuring us to commit. After we had signed a contract, and prior to his beginning the work, we wound up moving from that house. John had no problem working with us to apply our down payment to cabinetry in the new house. Again, after many more meetings and design changes we finally settled on the work we had done. When the cabinets were finally ready for install, John and his co-worker Eric were very professional. We had a newborn in the house and they were very sensitive to avoid problems with both dust and noise. My floor is far from level, and they did a great job keeping the cabinets level while fooling the eye with creative solutions so that the room slant wasn't too apparent. There was a slight fit problem with the countertop of one of the base cabinets, but John promised and delivered a new top within a week, all on his own dime. Considering he was coming from 4 hrs away, I found that to be tremendous customer service. A number of months after the installation, John stopped by when he was in the area to tell me that there's been a small detail in the way he scribed the cabinets to the wall (to accommodate the non-level wall) that's been bugging him and would we mind if he replaced the piece. Just another example of his dedication to his work and his desire to make sure his customers are completely satisfied. We definitely plan on working with John again in the future."

"Alejandro and Oscar were very helpful and professional with their work. They installed my new Formica countertop and installed a new sink to replace my old broken sink. My water lines and shutoff were getting older and worn out so they recommended changing them out as well. Will be using them again for any work needed around the house."

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

No, you should not put a hot pan or pot directly on a quartz countertop. While quartz is generally heat-resistant, the resin binders used in its manufacturing are sensitive to extreme heat from items exceeding 150 degrees Fahrenheit. This can damage the resin, leading to discoloration, burns, or even cracking. To prevent permanent damage, always use trivets or hot pads for hot cookware.

Concrete countertops should be sealed every one to three years, depending on the type of sealer used and the level of use your countertops get. For instance, hardworking kitchens will need yearly sealing. Sealing is important because it protects the surface from stains, moisture, and daily wear. Monitoring the countertop for signs of wear can help determine the ideal sealing schedule for your countertop.

You can resurface existing countertops as long as they’re not significantly damaged. Of course, it does depend on the material. Wood, natural stone, quartz, and even laminate are all good candidates for resurfacing. If you have tile, you may want to just replace the damaged tiles rather than resurface the entire countertop.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface countertops can be cut with standard woodworking tools like a circular saw or a jigsaw, but using the correct blade is crucial for the best results.

The recommended blade is a tungsten carbide-tipped blade, often called a solid-surface planer or triple chip grind blade. This type of blade is hard enough to cut through the material effectively. For a jigsaw, a fine-tooth down-cutting blade should be used.

It is important to note that a diamond blade is not necessary. Diamond blades are designed for harder materials like natural stone, concrete, or brick, and Corian is not a natural stone.

Using blades designed for wood is not recommended as they can cause microfractures that weaken the countertop's edges. While a tungsten carbide blade provides a much cleaner cut, the resulting edge will still be rough and must be sanded and smoothed to prevent microfractures from developing over time.

The least porous countertop material is engineered quartz. Made from a blend of natural quartz and resins, it is non-porous and highly resistant to stains, scratches, and bacteria. This makes quartz countertops exceptionally low-maintenance and durable, ideal for kitchens and bathrooms where hygiene and easy upkeep are priorities. Other non-porous options include solid surface materials like Corian, which also offer excellent resistance to moisture and stains.
