"I asked Juan to install Zellige tile backsplash in my kitchen. Immediately after starting, he increased the quote from $900 to $1300, for no clear reason. I paid him $650 up front. In one small area, he wanted to install the tile over the old plaster but I asked him to put hardibacker in instead, for which he added an extra $200. He then spent a week trying to convince me that the edges of my Zellige could not be finished with small pieces of mitered tile (as recommended in the installation guide). He wanted to use Schluter strips. After doing some research, I said there was no reason it couldn't be done, so he agreed to do it but increased the quote by $400. I had got someone else to install the hardibacker in the small area, so I asked him to provide a new quote, without the $200 he added for this task. He refused and said he would only take $100 off. When I insisted, he walked away with $650 in his pocket, having only completed the removal of the existing tile. Not recommended."

Stay away from KATZ DESIGN & BUILDERS in LOS ALAMITOS. I would give it a zero star if that was an option. Most dishonest company we have ever hired. Our kids’ house needed to have a fire pit filled in. KATZ sent an employee named VAL in person to discuss of the work that needed to be done. VAL wrote a contract which we agreed upon, of the amount of $13,000. Mid way through the project, VAL sounded very upset and told us that he must charge us $1,835 more if we want the job finished. Val then gave us a new invoice, a total of $14,835. We were 7 hrs away on a car trip. VAL actually asked us to leave him a positive 5* rating, after jacking the cost of the job up considerably. Furthermore, one worker brought while working at the site. We got back the next day, contacted the KATZ office and spoke to CHERYL who acted completely surprised that VAL has given us a contract with the extra charge. CHERYL indicated that she would talk to the PRESIDENT and VAL to straighten everything out. We then received a PDF file, written by the PRESIDENT and VAL , indicating that our kids’ house would have a MECHANIC’S LIEN placed on it we did not acquiesce and pay the additional amount. We are retirees but for nearly 30 yrs, we too had business where we never advertised and never had to. Business came to us by word of mouth and a sterling reputation. If we were to have run our business as dishonest as KATZ DESIGN & BUILDERS appeared to have been, we would have been out of business. We heartily do NOT RECOMMEND KATZ DESIGN & BUILDERS, AS THEY ARE THE MOST DISHONEST COMPANY."

It’s best to start with tiling the shower floor before moving on to the walls for the most visually-pleasing results. When taking on any tiling project, you’ll want the wall tiles to “sit” neatly on the floor tiles rather than overlapping them. Finishing your floor tiles first will allow you to place your wall tiles without any gaps, holes, or awkward intersections.

Flooring installation usually takes about one to three days, so it’s a project you can do over a long weekend if you plan to DIY. Keep in mind that for some types of flooring, like hardwood or laminate, you’ll need to let the floor panels sit out of the packaging to acclimate them to their future home. This step will add at least a day to the project time, but it will help minimize the risk of warping due to changes in temperature and humidity.
