Will post pics when final shower head is done.
In addition to his great work product Mark is just a really great guy. He is respectful, he is honest, fair and he shows up on time and does exactly what he says he will. He even went above and beyond to fix things for us just because they needed to be fixed. For example, he put some WD40 on our door hinges so they would stop squeaking and even fixed our under-cabinet lighting in our kitchen.
One other outstanding qualities of Mark's is his vast breadth of experience. It is SOOO valuable to work with a guy like Mark that has 30 years of experience. It's highly unlikely that you can show him a job he hasn't seen before and he pulls on those experiences to ensure that your job is done perfectly. He can also offer you great advice that he's learned over the years (i.e. what color tile goes with your counter, what styles are people using today, what color grout looks best with your tile.) For example, we were planning to do a plain white sub-way tile in our kitchen and were just going to get a regular shiny white one from any basic store. Mark said, this is just a suggestion but you might want to consider using the matte style which is much more modern and being used more in kitchen's today. AND we love it and are so grateful that he made that suggestion!!! The patio, the bathrooms and the wet-bar jobs also look fantastic and there is not one single thing I wish he did differently in our home. If you are in search of a custom tile installer your search should end here, hire Mark!!! I assure you you will be extremely happy with the end result and working with him throughout the process.
Mark came out within 1 day of our call for a free estimate. He gave us a very competitive bid and we booked him for the job immediately with no regrets.
He showed up, as scheduled, and got to work right away. The best thing I can say about Mark is that he truly cares about his craft and is invested in how the project turns out. Everyone else we talked to only seemed to care about getting the job and getting paid. Mark is passionate about tile-work and it shows in his work.
He asked for our input at every step of the way and also gave us honest feed-back about our tile choices. It felt like we did the project together.
On top of the great work that Mark did, he is truly pleasant to be around and exudes positive energy. He is 100% trust-worthy and we felt totally comfortable with him being in our house on his own.
We are planning to add a new bathroom in the future, and when we are ready, we will definitely be calling Mark at LA Custom Tile.
He did a decent job on the new tile, but when it came to precision work cutting out and replacing old broken tiles, the workmanship was mediocre at best. The demo must have been done badly with lots of debris in the pipes, because his plumbing work left us with a clogged sink drain which later required another plumbing company to come out and cut out the cast iron pipe and replace it, along with a whole new sewer line. All the brand new faucets drip. The grout is not very good, already showing some cracking and chipping after only 2 months of use.
Mark is a very nice person, He works from the heart. But I did not like his attitude about working from the contract. He went way over time - it took him 3 months instead of 6 weeks, as he works alone, He arrived every day cheerful, but left only after working 4 or 5 hours. Every day he cried about how much he was spending at Home Depot for the rough plumbing items (also in the contract), and by the end of the first week he had 1/2 of the agreed fee, but had only done the demo and 1/2 of the rough plumbing.
When I slowed down the remaining payments according to the contract, he got very insulted.
There were too many personality clashes, so the entire experience felt like an endless fight. Mark is a good person, as I say, and I do like him in spite of all the problems, but I would not recommend him to anyone who wants a good, on-time, on-budget professional job done right he first time.
Here are the top observations that differentiate Mark from other contractors I have hired.
1) he calls back when he says he is going to, he arrives when he said he would, he doesn't disappear suddenly.
2) When something small came up that would be easy for him to say "you need to hire an electrician/ plumber/ framer etc" he just took care of it
3) he did everything himself-- he could have had day laborers do the demolition work etc, but he wanted to be sure nothing was damaged
4) I would strongly recommend him
5) he was always one step ahead of the project so nothing went wrong or felt behind
6) he is old school craftsman contractor he cemented all the shower walls and floor to perfection then he installed the tiles perfectly
Communication: He called me back immediately upon my first request. Stayed in contact throughout the process. And always let me know what was going on and what was left to do.
Punctuality: Mark kept all appointment times and if he couldn't he called to let us know a new time.
Quality of Work: Mark was very forth coming with suggestions and options going so far as to pick up extra marterials so we could make an informed decision about our choices. The mosaic looks perfect. Extactly as we discussed.
Pricing and Time Line: The cost was very resonable and was done quickly.
I would reccomend LA Custom Tile and Mark to anyone who asks. Wish I had more work that needed to be done.
Thanks
I wanted to avoid replacing the whole floor; I just wanted the loose tiles reset. He was able to do this, and went above and beyond to give me the best result possible under the circumstances. It should be noted that the tiles were not installed properly originally, so he was working on top of and adjacent to shoddy work. It's not perfect, but if I wanted perfect I would have had him redo the whole thing. He kept me informed throughout the work, showing me areas of imperfection along the way to make sure that I would be happy with the end result. I think I am happier with the end result than he was, because he is clearly a perfectionist!
I would hire him again for any tile job large or small and would recommend him to friends without hesitation.
LA Custom Tile came out and installed the backsplash in our kitchen after I finally fired the contractor who had his "tile person" make a mess of the installation. Mark had to take out what the contractor that had already put in. And it was a hard tile to put in because it was strips of glass, porcelain and metals. Mark's work was very well done. He got here on time. He cleaned up. He was telling me what choices I had. There was a lot of planning ahead of time to go into this project and Mark did not skip a step. I would rate LA Custom Tile an 'A', everything's an 'A', across the board.
We also had an idea of what tile/fixtures we wanted to use in the project, so Mark was flexible, only charging me for labor and his materials where it made sense to do so, provided I could do my own tile/fixture shopping. This let me have a bit of control over my budget in terms of material costs, which I appreciated. Not many contractors would be so accommodating.
We dealt with a few problems related to wrong plumbing parts that the suppliers had screwed up, but Mark was quick to adjust and we never lost time while we ordered new parts. Mark's work was meticulous and perfectionist when it came to setting the tile, making sure the tiles lined up perfectly around drains and borders, or that a tricky mosaic was perfectly laid out -- little details that can really separate a pro from the rest. He did all the work himself, was on site personally every day, and didn't sub anything out.
Ultimately, the project was a really good experience all around. If you can snag Mark for your tile and bathroom project, you're very lucky! I know I will be calling him for any future projects. The only regret we sold the condo and now we don't get to live with our beautiful new bathrooms.
The most recent job we had LA Custom Tile do was in the Master bath of our BRAND NEW condo complex??.which needed repairs due to the sub-par original construction. I though it might be too small a job for Mark (and well beneath his talents) to be of interest to him?but...he was only to happy to help us out. For anyone wanting ANY sort of work on tile - do call LA CUSTOM TILE?
Mark is firstly an ARTIST who knows how to maximize the beauty of tile or stone.
He is on time for appointments or calls to let you know he is going to be even a few minutes late.
He is meticulous. He cleans up beautifully and takes his trash with him.
He is fair on price.
I highly recommend him.
