"They were great! I want to say it was like a week and they were done. They gave me a 50 year warranty when everybody else I was talking to only had a 30 year. My wife and I were thrilled. we exatic about how much better our house looks. The guys were super clean and I did not find a nail in the yard."

"It went very well.  He never varied from his estimate of labor costs and there was only a few extra supplies that needed purchasing after his original materials estimate but that was usually for extra work we asked him to do as the project progressed.  There were a few times when we observed things that we preferred another way (such as the color of paint used on the vents) and when they were brought up with him he adjusted very quickly.  Much of the work was done while we were on vacation and we trusted Ceaser with the keys to our house.  We're very happy with the final result.

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

A chimney cleaning brick or log can help loosen creosote between professional chimney cleaning appointments. Although they can help keep your chimney cleaner, they are not a substitute for chimney sweeping and are not meant to be used regularly.

The answer can vary widely based on a home's age and design. As with any type of remodeling project, assume that every structure is load-bearing until confirming otherwise with a structural engineer. Almost all modern homes have chimneys that are fully independent from the rest of the home's framing. As a result, they don't bear any load beyond their own weight. However, many historic homes built prior to the 1900s contain load-bearing chimneys that tie into the surrounding roof and floor joists. If possible, use a home's blueprints or look for chimney connections that indicate load-bearing qualities to get your answer.

Yes, removing a chimney is a difficult and major undertaking. Chimneys often provide structural support to a home, so if it's a load-bearing structure, you'll need to take extra precautions to maintain your home's integrity. A project of this complexity typically requires a structural engineer, a masonry contractor, and a demolition crew. The removal process may involve taking the chimney out brick by brick from inside the walls. The cost for chimney removal can range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on the job's complexity. Due to the difficulty and cost, some homeowners opt to remove the fireplace and seal the chimney at the top and bottom, sometimes also removing the visible exterior portion at the roofline.

While it is possible to clean your own chimney and fireplace with the appropriate brushes and safety gear, hiring a professional is often recommended. A professional ensures thorough creosote removal and compliance with safety standards. They can also safely access high or hidden areas that may be difficult for a homeowner to reach, providing comprehensive assurance that the job is completed correctly and safely.

While a hot fire can help heat up and loosen tar within your chimney, making it a recommended step before using a creosote log, it will not burn off significant existing buildup on its own. Attempting to remove built-up creosote with a hot fire is dangerous and can cause a chimney fire. For safe and effective removal of caked-on creosote, the best approach is to hire a professional chimney sweep.
