"I truly felt inspired when the salesman told me what my choices were and the things I needed to consider when choosing a paver color and type. The draw back was that he underestimated the possible cost by alot. I was set to use Best Masonary until we received the true estimate. It was more than twice the amount the salesman said it could be. He estimated $12-$13 thousand. The estimate we received was $31,000. Even if we used their in house financing (pay half and the second half paid over the next year) we couldn't swing it unless we get another loan. Not going to happen. I'm so disappointed."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

The answer can vary widely based on a home's age and design. As with any type of remodeling project, assume that every structure is load-bearing until confirming otherwise with a structural engineer. Almost all modern homes have chimneys that are fully independent from the rest of the home's framing. As a result, they don't bear any load beyond their own weight. However, many historic homes built prior to the 1900s contain load-bearing chimneys that tie into the surrounding roof and floor joists. If possible, use a home's blueprints or look for chimney connections that indicate load-bearing qualities to get your answer.

No, there are no ventless pellet stoves. Because pellet stoves burn wood pellets, they produce wood smoke—which contains carbon monoxide. This harmful substance needs to be vented out of your living area. That said, there are vent-free and ventless fireplaces that run on natural gas and propane. These offer the heating and ambiance of a fireplace without the need to vent thick and hazardous wood smoke.

Yes, an outdoor fireplace should use fire bricks. Fire bricks are specially designed to withstand high levels of heat and thus won’t crack as easily as regular bricks when exposed to the intense heat inside a fireplace.

Yes, capped chimneys should still be vented. Failing to vent a chimney will result in condensation buildup inside the chimney, which commonly results in mold growth. If mold begins to grow in a chimney, it frequently goes undetected and spreads quickly through the home. Mold and moisture can damage the structural integrity of your home, and exposure to mold can cause discomfort and illness in residents.

This will depend on the size of the pellet stove and how much of the house you’re heating, i.e. just one room or the entire house. Many pellet stoves use anywhere from 80 to 345 watts of electricity per hour. In terms of the pellets, a 40-pound bag can cost $5 to $9. A bag of pellets will burn for about 24 hours.
