Every job was done on time and carefully executed until we were totally satisfied. JR will be the first call for our next projects."

Small jobs welcome

"Jake is a true professional and you will not be disappointed if you hire him for your project. He is honest, reliable, trustworthy and meticulous in his work. I was getting frustrated trying to find a contractor or deck company that would repair/replace my deteriorating deck. People would not return my calls or show up when we had agreed on an appointment time. When I called Jake he patiently walked me through the things that would be important to consider when embarking on the deck project. This was critical because I live on a canyon and the deck is suspended in the air, so it is more complicated than a deck that is at ground level. Jake came over to look at the deck and spent the necessary time to figure out what was really involved, including replacing some joists and beams that could not be saved. So instead of taking a quick look at the top of the deck, giving me a superficial quote and then adding costs on to it later, Jake was thorough about the scope of the project from the very beginning. In addition, he excelled at communicating regularly about work schedules, various options for the project and cost. Jake understands that cost is very important (sometimes most important) to homeowners and he acts accordingly. Jake was also straightforward about his availability explaining that he would not be able to start for a few months due to prior commitments. He even told me that I might want to consider another contractor or deck company if I wanted to get started sooner. That told me that Jake was more interested in my satisfaction than ensuring he ultimately got the job. However, at that point I was convinced that he was the best option and for me it was more important to have the right person for the job than to begin work immediately. I'm very happy that I did wait, because the deck is finished now, it is beautiful and just what I wanted. Finally, Jake takes real pride in his work and he will treat your project like he is working on his own home. That's probably the highest compliment I can pay him. I have other projects outstanding and have already asked Jake to provide bids for those."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

The proper height for a stair riser or deck step is between four and seven inches, with seven inches often considered the most comfortable. Building your stairs to this height ensures a strain-free step position and minimizes the risk of trip and fall injuries. For optimal safety and comfort, especially on deck stairs, a rise of around seven inches should be paired with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. While it is possible to design stairs with risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. Always check with your local building codes, as they may mandate specific dimensions that differ from these general recommendations.

Finding a reputable deck builder should start with speaking with a local company and asking for samples of past work and references. You can review the company’s workmanship and speak with past customers to learn what the customer service was like throughout the process. It’s also a good idea to read online reviews and check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website to see if the company has a history of customer complaints. If you can get a referral from a family member or friend, that’s another great option.

Yes, it is possible to build a small, basic deck for $5,000, particularly if you use less expensive materials and a simple design. To stay within this budget, consider a size under 10x12 feet and use affordable materials like pressure-treated wood or cedar. While the general cost for deck building ranges from $4,350 to $12,560, with an average around $8,200, some projects can be completed for as little as $4,350. You can also save on labor costs by doing the work yourself, but be aware that mistakes could end up costing more than hiring a professional. A contractor may have a higher upfront cost, but they can ensure a safe, stable deck that will last.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Yes, deck footings typically require an inspection before laying down concrete. While not all local building codes require footing inspection, proper placement ensures a safe and structurally sound deck. An inspector will verify that the deck can adequately hold what you put on top of it., and that the footings have been dug to the correct dimensions.
