I'm proud to say that I started working on electrical projects when I was just 16 years old. My grandfather, who was an electrician and also played the guitar like me, inspired me to pursue this field. I obtained my OSHA certification to ensure workplace safety. In addition, I have an AS degree in HVAC and refrigeration from SJCC, as well as another degree in Facilities Maintenancece. I've earned certificate levels 2 and 3 in HVAC, as well as an entry-level certificate in solar installations. Being EPA certified as an HVAC technician demonstrates my expertise in this area. I also took a year course for EMS. Safety is a priority for me, so I've also obtained CPR certification. And by the way, ¡Hablamos español! Being able to communicate in Spanish adds another valuable dimension to my skill set. I'm constantly striving to learn and improve in my fields of interest.

Electrical questions, answered by experts

While you can plug most electrical items into a GFCI outlet, some with stationary motors, which experience a small amount of current leakage, such as vent fans or fluorescent lighting, can cause tripping. For this reason, it’s often best to plug them into a standard outlet. This can also be a problem if the circuit is over 100 feet long. Some appliances, such as hair dryers, have built-in GFCI protection, so connecting them to a standard outlet is fine.

How far you can run underground electric depends on the wire gauge (generally AWG) and the circuit voltage. Too much voltage drop in an electrical circuit can negatively affect performance, so the smaller the voltage drop, the better. Ideally, it shouldn't exceed 3%. The smaller the wire and the longer the run, the more significant the voltage drop.

For example, with a 120-volt circuit, you can run 60 feet of 12 AWG cable without losing more than 3% voltage. With a 240-volt circuit, you can run 120 feet of 12 AWG wire while maintaining a voltage drop of 3% or less.

No, because amps and volts measure very different things. However, you can use basic equations to find amps or volts by using data about one of the measurements to calculate the other.

Upgrading your electrical system can save you money on your monthly utility bills by powering your home more efficiently. Electrification nonprofit Rewiring America estimates that a household could save $1,800 per year on energy bills by upgrading to a modern electric heat pump, switching to a heat pump for their water, installing solar panels on the roof, and converting to an electric vehicle.

While it’s not mandatory unless you’re purchasing a home, it is important to schedule regular home electrical inspections for safety and to maintain your house’s value. Inspections can reduce fire risk and can help save money on insurance premiums. They can also catch problems before they start, saving money on repairs down the line.
