"The generator is a piece of junk. So is the shabby shed that was built around it. The project has been going on for more than two months now the work is not finished and the generator does not work. I would not dare to use it anyway, that's how bad it all looks. The workers that were brought in to help are not licensed from what I heard. I paid $3000 as a first payment. The total price would be $9665. I am at a point now that I contacted other electricians to get this project done. I still think that Chris, the electrician, had good intentions but that does not make the generator useful. I probably even have to pay to get it hauled away. Overall it was a very bad experience."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

It is worth upgrading an electrical panel when you consider potential long-term savings on your energy bill and insurance costs. Older homes with a 100-amp service susceptible to overheating or blown fuses could also benefit from the upgrade. If you're running large appliances frequently (central air, heating) or have items with large electric demands (in-home saunas, hot tubs), you could benefit from installing a 300- or 400- amp service instead

The safest way to pull an electrical cord from the wall outlet is by gently but firmly grabbing the plug and pulling it out. Pulling on the cord instead of the plug can cause damage to the cord, leading to an increased risk of electrical problems like fire or electric shock. If you notice damaged wiring on an appliance or device, it’s best to stop using it immediately.

Yes, electric fences need power to operate. They are powered by either a battery or an electrical outlet. In heavy snow or extreme rain, or if the power goes out, your electric fence might stop working. Knowing how to test an electric fence is important for figuring out if the fence is still functioning properly.

Yes, GFCI breakers are required for all outdoor outlets. This code requirement applies to all outlets located on balconies, decks, patios, and other outdoor lounge spaces. In addition, outdoor outlets need to have watertight covers that provide protection when cords are plugged in. If you have an older home that may not be up to code, it's a good idea to also ask your electrician about adding GFCIs to some indoor areas. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and any other areas of a home that are commonly exposed to moisture should have GCFI breakers.

Yes—if a breaker is old or damaged, it might not be able to detect power surges or electrical overload. If that happens, the breaker won’t trip. Instead, it will begin to overheat, putting your electrical system at risk of fire or total electrical failure. Circuit breakers don’t last forever, so you can proactively replace old or damaged breakers before they stop working.
