"His name is Andrew Johnson. He is going to be doing our carport next. He does all of our electrical but he also does incredible solar. It was around $17,000 for the solar. We have a big house. You can't beat his prices. He doesn't have a huge company. His guys are great. He shows up when he says. He does meticulous work. The city's came out and told him right in front us that he did better than perfect. He lives in our neighborhood. He told him to get on Angie's List"

"I'm very happy with the work that was done by Landmark construction and energy crew. At first, we met with Ron that came over and met with us about the issues that we had with our water heater and with the bills that we currently pay for electric. Ron recommended us to replace the bulky old water heater and to install a tankless system that will supply hot water immediately and with the use of less gas. We liked that idea and we decided to go for this project. Ron came over to our house with his 2 people that basically took care of all the removal and the installation of the new system. The work that they did took only 2 days from start to finish and now we have more space at the garage, and the bills are much lower than before…."

"This company is obviously nationwide and hires local contractors.  I trusted Agies List that all contractors are licensed, bonded and have background checks.  This person was a handyman and not qualified to wall mount, conceal wires, add electrical outlet.  He  spend five hours in my home, for a job that should have taken two hours and left the area in a disaster.  The TV was hung close to the ceiling, the wires were hanging down from the TV, and the receiver was sitting on top of a plaster box because the cord was too short.  He was obviously not qualified to install TV wall mounts.  I have photos.    As soon as he left, I called Best Buy Geek Squad.  They were able to come out the next day and mount the TV professionally.  I have used the geek squad in Virginia and they are highly qualified.  They charge more than this nationwide company but you get what you pay for.  I called Angies List the day after the disaster and said i did not want to rate this company but I wanted to talk to a manager. No one called me to apologize. I have cancelled my membership.  Do not use this company unless you can be assured that the local contractor is qualified and is licensed.  You should never let anyone into your home that has not had background checks.

"The plumbing upgrade and dishwasher installation went very well this morning.  I bought a dishwasher for first-time installation in my older home and had texted Joshua the night before with pics of the "then current" plumbing and electrical situation.  He arrived on time with proper plumbing and electrical fittings and went immediately to work.  The used dishwasher I'd bought required more pieces, so getting those from Lowe's was arranged and he finished the entire job within 2 hours!  The only small concern (which he immediately straightened out!!) was the chrome airgap pop-up on the sink was a bit crooked, but again, he fixed that right up.   I am looking forward to hearing his estimate on some upcoming electrical  work for my patio.   I WILL recommend him to my neighbors and local friends!!

"My wife and I have spoke to well over 6 different solar companies.  We didn’t “feel it” with them.  They would listen to what we wanted, tell us they can work with us and then hit us with the lease pitch.  Even if you change the word “lease” to something else it is still a lease… Sorry.  We simply wanted to buy our panels and have them installed.  We wanted to have the least money out of pocket and take advantage of the government rebates and loans.  We wanted to have 100% of the energy produced applied to our PG&E bill.  The others said “No, no, no.  We install panels, you pay us for your electricity at a reduced rate.”  OK, that’s fair if you don’t know there are other options.   Then we met Jordan and Daniel from Gold Rush Energy Solutions.  They knocked on our door one HOT Saturday afternoon. Right away my wife and I liked these guys.  I had a lot of questions and they answered everything backing it up with documentation whenever I needed it.  They weren’t “Yes Men” though.  There were a couple of points that weren’t going to work but they came up with alternate approaches whenever possible.  We signed on the dotted line. Less than a week later they and their team were on our roof putting in the system.  They had arrived right on time (maybe even a little early).  They were professional and neat as they worked.  Our neighbors had a team installing solar as well.  They had ordered theirs 2-3 months prior and they were finally getting the panels put up.  Their workers were definitely not on the same caliber as the Gold Rush Energy Solutions crew.  One big difference was that by noon when our solar was installed it was FULLY installed.  Ready to run.  The inspector showed up after lunch and was done in no time.  He was thrilled at the job they did with all of the electrical modifications and additions.  There was nothing for hime to complain about which made his paperwork very short and simple.  The house next door wasn’t even scheduled for inspection yet.  We had to wait a few days for PG&E to process us into the system for the meter changes they needed to do.  Then we were fully online.  The guys went out of their way and asked if we had any leftover house paint which we did.  They painted the metal conduit running up to the roof so that it blends in… neighbors is still an ugly silver/grey. Would I hire them again?  Absolutely YES. Would I refer them to a friend?  A resounding YES. I wish all jobs went so well. A very happy customer."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

Yes, the National Electric Code (NEC) requires at least one GFCI outlet in each sectioned-off portion of an unfinished basement, partly to ensure a power source is available for a sump pump in case of flooding. If you install multiple outlets in your unfinished basement, all of them must be GFCI-protected. For finished basements, standard outlets are generally permitted, but at least one GFCI outlet is still required per circuit. Keep in mind that local municipalities may have additional codes, so it's best to consult a licensed electrician to ensure your home is fully compliant.

Several signs can indicate a light switch is bad. If the switch feels loose, slides down after you flip it, or requires multiple flicks to turn the light on, it may be failing. Other common indicators include flickering lights or a general failure to turn the light on or off. Pay attention to any unusual sounds, such as crackling, buzzing, or popping when you operate the switch. More serious signs, which can present a fire or shock hazard, include the switch feeling excessively warm or hot, sparking, smoking, or emitting a burning smell. If you notice any of these dangerous signs, stop using the switch immediately and call an electrician.

Hawaii is currently rated as the most expensive state for utilities. How much are utilities for a house in Hawaii? With electricity costs in Hawaii totaling nearly 42 cents per kilowatt-hour, residents are paying more to run their households than any other residents. Electricity costs in Hawaii are so high, mostly due to the fact that most of the electricity available to residents is produced using oil that must be shipped in from other places.

Yes. A pellet stove should have its own 110V outlet and dedicated circuit breaker. Otherwise, it could overload the system. Pellet stoves can create major fire hazards if they aren’t wired properly or have to share circuits. Get in touch with a local electrician or pellet stove expert if you need to run new wiring for a pellet stove.
