"Dave was punctual and was very hardworking, making sure my new decking system was installed correctly. He took the time to install each layer of the decking system and made the finished surface graded so the water drained off perfectly. I would hire him again if I ever need to redo my deck."

"We were very pleased with both the process and the outcome of the project. We received clear explanations and sound recommendations from OC Decks on what needed to done. The work was done in a timely manner, and the work area was well maintained and kept cleaned up during the project, and any existing structure (e.g., balcony railing) was not damaged. We were impressed with the professionalism and performance of the workers."

"The service went well.  They tore off the rain gutters and fixed some other things.  They did a good job prepping.  The owner came out and was friendly and courteous.  He explained things well.  It took two and a half days to paint.  They do good work. They are fairly quick and good to work with."

"While they were up there cleaning the gutters they told me about the deterioration of all the sealants on the air vents, the chimney and exhaust fans on the roof. They took pictures and showed me and I had them redo all the sealants. I have a feeling that that was a smart way for them to get some more work (most people aren't aware of the damage the Ca sun can do). It was the owner of the company and his son that did all the work and they were clean, pleasant and professional. When the 1st rains came after the work was done I suddenly remembered a small leak we had had in our bathroom and IT WAS NO LONGER THERE!! I was very happy with the work they did and would definitely recommend using them."

"We used United Builders of LA for our bathroom renovation and couldn't be happier with the results.  Having been through a messy kitchen remodel with another contractor before (to some not-so-good results), I must say I was so relieved and pleased to have finally found a great team in Mike and Nir.
My guest bathroom needed some major updating and renovation.  I received several quotes to begin my renovation process and decided to go with Nir (whose bid was right in the middle of all quotes) because he really took the time to walk me through the entire process and his expertise was exemplary.  At our initial meeting, Nir told me it would take about 2-3 weeks (most likely 3) from start to finish.  I'm happy to say that that's exactly what it took.
Once our actual work started, Mike took over the day-to-day operations. He was terrific!  He really seemed to care about the quality of work, was at our house every day to check on the progress and was always reachable by phone whenever I had a question (and I had many).  Mike oversaw everything:  Demo of the bathroom (they were very clean and carried away the trash the same day), plumbing (I was converting my shower/bathtub combo into a walk-in shower), tiling (installed carrera marble on the floor, subway tile on the shower walls and half-way up the walls around the rest of the bathroom), installation of all new fixtures, new windows, and paint.
The workers were all on time every day -- every single one of them (from demo to the plumbers to the fantastic tile guys) were professional and great to work with.  And their quality of work was top notch.  I was particularly impressed with the tile guys.  The tile team really took their time to make sure everything was meticulous and the results really show.
All in all, I have definitely found my go-to guys for any renovations I'd like in the future.  Thanks Nir, Mike and your entire team for a JOB WELL DONE!"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

In most cases, there should be a small gap between the house and the deck, usually no more than ½ to ¾ of an inch. This space allows water and moisture to flow through instead of pooling against the side of your house. It also lets flashing protect your siding from runoff, which is one of the most common issues with decks.

If you have wood decking, there are several common deck problems that you might encounter. For example, your natural wood boards may fade over time due to things like sunlight, weather, and debris. On top of that, some types of wood decking can rot, grow mold, and attract destructive pests—including termites, carpenter ants, and woodpeckers.

In most cases, your deck will need some form of deck footing to hold it in place, preventing moisture from rotting your wood and decreasing your deck’s lifespan. Concrete deck blocks are the most common type of footing for floating decks. Some homeowners use ground-level deck footings. For added security, consider digging and laying your ground-level footings below ground.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Both composite and PVC decking are excellent alternatives to wood. However, while composite is moderately priced and lasts around 30 years, PVC costs more and lasts longer. PVC is also more durable, though both materials are more durable than wood decking. Ultimately, the choice between composite and PVC decking will come down to your budget and preferences.
