"Robert is the best contractor we’ve ever had! His attention to detail and his craftsmanship are stellar. Over the years, he has redone our kitchen, our bathroom, and recently he built us a loft bedroom in our daughters’ room. He raised the ceilings from 8 to 12 feet and the results are amazing! He built us a beautiful hard maple ladder from scratch and made a metal pipe railing for the loft as well. He added lighting and plywood in our attic for easy storage. He added a ceiling fan and new electrical/usb outlets throughout. He even added fun led color lights under the loft bed to add a cool lighting effect to the room. My daughters absolutely love their new space! We also had him design and build us a gorgeous floating bookshelf for our dining room and we could not be happier with it! It’s so amazing to have a beautiful space to display our books. We would 100% recommended Robert for all of your remodeling projects!"

Excavations take a few days or up to a few weeks. The time it takes to excavate an area depends on the size of the area, the type of soil, the type of excavator, and even the time of year, since winter can make digging up the ground more difficult.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

It is a common belief that excavation is easier or less costly when done in the summer or when the ground is not frozen. Seasons have little effect on when excavation can occur; however, inclement weather can prolong the duration of the job and potentially increase costs. It's best to speak with your contractor beforehand to check if they plan to cover your furniture, protect your vents, or use fans to redirect dust. Because decomposed granite is a durable material, a crushed rock or gravel base is optional as long as the DG is properly installed and compacted. However, installing a base is a good idea because it will ensure proper drainage and stability and act as a weed suppressant (although you may still occasionally have to pull weeds). Installing an adequate base can also increase the durability of driveways and walkways. If you forego the paver base or gravel underneath, line the area with landscaping fabric to avoid weeds.
