"Wayne and his crew are great to work with. They patched and painted interior doors and walls, as well as a 3D wall. They also painted our decks, railings, awnings and trim. We are very pleased with the attention to detail."

"I called and left a message. I did not receive a response so after a week I called again and John answered. He recognized my name/request and said he was sick the previous week which was why he didn't return my call. He came to our home and I showed him the work to be done. He said we couldn't replace the sink without ruining the granite countertop so that project was scrapped. For the electrical and ceiling fan work, he said he was busy for the next two weeks and recommended we use Kevin at Shea Electric who he would pass our number on to. (I kind of got the impression he didn't want to do the work.) Kevin made an appointment to come out but after calling once to say he would be late, never showed up or called back (that was 4 days ago). I will enter the Shea Electric review under that company."

"Finally an honest Solar company!! I went through several companies trying to get quotes for one of my properties, either they were ridiculously expensive or they didn't return my calls. A friend of mine referred me to Mega Sun and I have to say I am very pleased. Within a couple days from the initial phone call I already had an estimate and once i decided to go with them the installation was completed in one week. Its been a little over a month since they completed the install and everything is working smoothly.

I was amazed at just how great the customer service was. I just want to say thank you to the whole team who helped out, I really appreciate all your hard work. Now I know you guys are the ones to call for all future jobs."

"Having had 2 previous contractors, Palm Construction was the 3rd & final contractor that completed my project in a timely manner by doing a full kitchen & bath remodel. They also installed a HVAC system, redid all the plumbing, had my house re-painted, had my deck reinforced and did an earthquake retro-fit. They did exceptional work in a very professional manner. The workers were very friendly and cleaned up at the end of every day, and when asked to do something, they did it without hesitation. I would also like to mention the tile work done in my bathroom was done with detail and precision and it turned out beautiful! Yes, I went through a lot of headaches and frustration with the previous contractors since the work started last November but when Palm Construction took over the job, Ken & Jacob made sure things kept moving to get the project done! I couldn't be more happier the way everything turned out."

"Excellent! The team was very well organized and did a great job with the painting! We asked for a couple additional beams to be painted and they were great about taking care of that. They cleaned up everything when they were done and the price was very reasonable."

"We had a slow start at first but that was not because of Ryan's service, we originally contacted him in February and was on his schedule for February 24th, however the current Job he was working took longer as the job apparently had grown into a longer job.  So we scheduled to February 27th, and then the rain started we had several much needed storms coming in and it was very important that the decks were totally dry before coating and it had to be dry for at least 48 hours after the coating.  Our next schedule was on April 8th due to March being off and on rain.
When Ryan arrived at 10:00 in the morning he brought the material the his crew would need to complete the job, his crew was a little late but once the started the job they did a very efficient job and cleaned up after they were done they were very pleasant and professional. All in all we are very happy with Ryan and his crew.

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Yes. Freestanding or floating decks are exactly what the name implies—structures with their own support beams. You can build a deck yourself and place it next to a house for the illusion of a connected deck without the hassle. Or you can construct it in a separate part of your yard for a dedicated outdoor entertainment space. For the purpose of removing a freestanding deck, the steps are the same as an attached deck, but you don’t have to cut the deck away from the home.

Composite decking might cost more upfront, but it delivers value in terms of durability. Unlike wood, composite material resists common deck problems such as rotting, fading, warping, and all the other things you don’t want a deck to do. The extra processes lead to a higher price tag, but you’ll save big in maintenance costs down the road.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Before installing a new railing, check the condition of the deck frame and joists, especially around the perimeter where posts attach. If boards are loose, soft, or show signs of rot, the structure may need repair. A deck pro can inspect your framing to confirm it meets load-bearing requirements.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.
